About the Item
Signed, titled and numbered from the edition of 30. One of several recent prints by Avery that continue to win awards and purchase by museums and public collections. Surrealistic image of skeletal looking over the shoulder of a printmaker as he works at his printing press. Memento Mori for printmakers.
The title of this work is derived from the writings of Bruno Schulz, who wondered if the substance of what we call reality could really be substantial enough to support the immensity of ideas whose integrity demands the resistance to incarnation. As the etching progressed, I began to think of it as a kind of summation of my work up until the present, and you may find quotations here and there from earlier pieces, as well as references to various outside influences and some goings-on of late.
David Avery continues to explore the expressive and technical possibilities inherent in black and white line etching. His work is included in the collections of the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, the New York Public Library, the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, the Stanford University Library among others, and has been noted in the New York Times. Even though “black and white doesn’t sell”, he has eschewed the use of color, finding the subtleties and tonalities of black and white most capable of creating the psychological mood that allows his work to be effective.

David Avery
David Avery has been creating finely detailed black and white etchings in San Francisco for twenty five years. Originally trained as a classical musician, he discovered etching almost by accident in a class at the local community college. After learning the basic techniques, he intently pursued his own course of discovery--being essentially -self taught. Over--the years, he has, developed an exceptional technique and has created a remarkable body of finely wrought miniature etchings and drypoints. - Photogenic, by Yuji HiratsukaBy Yuji HiratsukaLocated in Palm Springs, CASigned, titled, and numbered from the edition of 15. Image of a young girl with a bird perched on her head while someone takes her photo. While the images have some resemblance to traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, their sense of whimsy, satire and irony relate more closely to contemporary life and western sensibilities. Young women and their relationships to shoes, food, and fashion provide much of Hiratsuka’s subject matter. Another group of his prints focus on landscape, flowers, and floral patterns. Hiratsuka’s graphic work has been exhibited in the Americas, Europe and Asia. He has received numerous awards in international competitions. During the last four years he has had 14 solo shows in the United States, and international solo shows in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, Munich, Germany and Geneva, Switzerland.
