About the Item

"Dés Landscape" by noted Hungarian painter Dési Huber István (1895 - 1944) is an ink wash on paper created sometime in the 1920's. The artwork represents a landscape Des (Dej) where he spent a good portion of his life. The artwork is signed in pencil by the artist and presented in a black wood frame, matted under glass. Dési Huber István was born in in 1895. He had to leave his studies during childhood to work as an apprentice and later as a court clerk. After World War I he worked as a gold and silversmith's apprentice at his father's workshop in Dés. He started drawing under the painter Sándor Szopos. In 1921 he went to Pest where he attended the School of Applied Arts and Podolini Volkmann Artúr's Free School. Between 1924 and 1927 he worked as a silversmith in Italy. Upon his return home he became a member of KUT, the modernist Hungarian Artists Association of the time. The Hungarian artist group was founded in 1924 and operated until 1949. They declared themselves the heirs of the Eight. They were adherents of the modern fine arts, and for a time their aspirations were close to those of the French Post-Impressionist, Cubist and German Expressionists.
