Francois Vivares
Three original etchings of figures after Rembrandt

ca. 1766

About the Item

François Vivares was known to have produced several copies of images after older masters, such as, in this case, Rembrandt van Rijn. In this set, Vivares reproduces "The Quacksalver" (1635, Bartsch 129), "Beggar man and beggar woman conversing" (1630, Bartsch 164), and "Beggar Seated Warming His Hands at a Chafing Dish" (ca. 1630, Bartsch 173). These images of beggars and characters of the street seem as though Rembrandt made them from life, though often, like Vivares, Rembrandt took inspiration from or copied earlier artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Lucas van Leyden, Antonio Tempesta, and Jacques Callot. That Vivares found a market for Rembrandt's prints in the 1760s demonstrates the master's lasting legacy and popularity among collectors then as now. 3 x 2 inches each print 13.5 x 20.25 inches, frame Each print signed "F.V. fecit" in the plate, lower left Each print inscribed with Rembrandt's name or initials in the plate Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting; housed in a gold finish wood moulding. Overall good condition; some planar distortion in corners of prints; frame in excellent condition. François Vivares (1709 - 1782) was a French landscape-engraver, active in England. He was born at Saint-Jean-du-Bruel, near Montpellier, France and brought up in Geneva. He took on Peter Paul Benazech as apprentice in 1746. Vivares exhibited engravings with the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1766 and 1768. During the last thirty years of his life he resided in Great Newport Street, where he kept a print-shop. There he died and was buried in Paddington churchyard. His plates number about 160, and were largely published by John Boydell. Many were from the old masters: Claude, Gaspar Poussin, Il Bolognese, Vanderneer, and Cuyp; but a large proportion of them are views of English scenery after Thomas Gainsborough, Wootton, Thomas Smith of Derby, the Smiths of Chichester, and others. Claude's Enchanted Castle he left unfinished at his death, and it was completed by William Woollett. There is a portrait of Vivares, engraved by himself and James Caldwell. Source: Wikipedia
