George Massiot BrownSandeman Porto & Sherry – Iconic Original Poster1928
1928
About the Item
The Don: One of the most recognizable figures in poster history ever, quietly reveling in the simple delights of a glass of ruby port – typically thought of as a horseman, clad in a Portuguese capa negra – a reference to port wine – and a Spanish caballero hat – a reference to sherry.
George Massiot Brown from Ayrshire, Scotland, was working at the Lochend Printing Company in London when he created this motif which today is the oldest wine logo still in use. He dropped the name ‘Brown’ when signing in order to enhance the Continental aura of his work. This is also the reason, I guess, why it was printed in Paris.
The company was founded 1790 by the Scotsman George Sandeman in London for the import of port wine and sherry. As it turned out, this was an opportune time to trade in wines as France, previously a large exporter, was out of favor with a number of European countries due to their imperialistic tendencies and the rise of Napoleon. After only a few years, Sandeman himself expanded to the Iberian Peninsula where he invested in facilities.
While there have been many reissues of the image, this is the original, rare and impressive bill-board from 1928. Excellent colors, great condition – a gem of the Art Déco period.
