About the Item

Polish/American artist Ira Mosokowitz ( 1912-2001 ) emigrated to New York City in 1927 at the age of sixteen. He studied at the Art Students League under John Sloan and Harry Wickey and by the 1930’s had exhibitions of his paintings, lithographs and etchings in the great city. He moved to the Southwest and joined the Santa Fe Group of Artists and gained a national reputation for his portrayal of the Navajo peoples life and customs. Moskowitz returned to live in New York after 1947 and made many trips to Israel. Thereafter religion and Jewish culture played a vital role in his art. Isaac Bashevis Singer once said of Moskowitz; “Ira has recaptured the religious view of God and the world in his works.” His etchings, lithographs and paintings are included in many major collections in Europe, the United States and Israel.
