James Rosenquist
Morning Mirror

1966

About the Item

James Rosenquist Morning Mirror, 1966 is a mesmeric piece that captures your attention with the use of 3 colors; red, yellow, and grey. Front and center, in the middle of the composition, sits a framed quadrilateral form colored completely with red. Acting as a mirror, there are various shades and tones of red throughout the work, long rectangles that fizzle out act as light reflecting across a reflective surface, creating a variable of depth that is commonly seen in Rosenquist’s work. The border framing the mirror reflects off the corner joints, providing the illusion that this work was framed with a reflective moulding. Surrounding the mirror is an array of colors and varying line weights, with yellow and red irregular lines ebbing and flowing into unique, yet repetitive, patterns. Delicately placed throughout the sides are grey forms that resemble a sunburst cheerfully exploding. A drop shadow is highlighted on the bottom of the mirror’s frame, the prevailing sense of depth a quality that allows Rosenquist to work comfortably in a surreal space. Created in 1966, this lithograph in colors on BFK Rives paper is work is hand-signed by James Rosenquist (North Dakota, 1933 – 2017) in pencil in the lower right margin and is numbered from the edition of 28 in pencil in the lower middle margin.
