Jorge Castillo belongs to that generation of Spanish artists that had to into exile where their art was more appreciated than in their native country. In a time when abstraction dominated the Spanish market, Castillo was succeeding with his surrealism on the other side of the ocean and signed up by Marlborough Gallery in New York.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
In 1933, in Pontevedra (Galicia, Spain), was born Jorge José Carmelo Castillo. His father, businessman and traveler, emigrated to Argentina for political reasons, where he later died.
Castillo quits school very young, taking various jobs until he decided to become independent at age 17 in a studio apartment on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. That is when he begins his creative activity doing some crafts and writing screenplays for films and also writing a novel. He learns technical drawing while working in the engineering industry, and starts his interest in contemporary painting.
Since 1950 his interest in painting becomes more noticeable, focusing on it and making friends with some of the Galician painters of the time who also lived in Buenos Aires like Laxeiro, Colmeiro and Luis Manuel Seoane.
In 1953 he made a trip to northern Argentina, with intention of selling the watercolor paintings created there in Brazil, but fails and returns to Buenos Aires with empty pockets. By repeating this trip two years later, he is arrested at River Command Prison, where he spends three days. Thus he was decided to seek asylum in this prison, to work and raise money.
In 1956 he returned to Spain, something he gets thanks to the request for repatriation through the Spanish Embassy in Buenos Aires, which is granted on condition of military service in Zaragoza.
Once the military service is done and a few days before leaving the barracks, an officer destroys many of the more than two hundred works that Castillo made in those eighteen months of service. With little money and with great difficulty finding work, he is forced to live on the street until late 1959. At this time he met Joan Mordó, owner of the Biosca Gallery.
In 1961 he married, and by then he is well known in Paris and has taken up residence in Barcelona. Two years later he was widowed.
He moved to Paris between 1966 and 1969, where he met his future wife, the Italian Marienza Binetti. During this time, his work breaks all boundaries, and is widely known both in Europe and the United States. Creates the triptych "Palomares", of a great size, which is inspired by the incident in which the american atomic bomb was lost in the Mediterranean and that caused a global impact.
Thanks to an invitation from the German Academic Council in 1969 he lives and works in Berlin, where he made many works (paintings, prints and sculptures) of large sizes. Castillo consolidates his fame thanks to many exhibitions such as the one performed at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin in 1970 or the exhibition devoted to his prints in the gallery Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hannover in 1973.
In 1979 he moved to New York, decision taken influenced by the good relationship with the Marlborough Gallery located in the Big Apple.
Castillo's work, mainly figurative, has a dreamlike, surreal themes in its beginnings, that will drift towards more intimate subjects and still lifes, in which he tries to eulogize everyday objects. Finally focusing on urban New York landscapes, that impressed him for their iconographic strength, and those large architectures make him explore endless plastic exercises very characteristic in his work.
It is in Santiago de Compostela where he has a permanent museum dedicated to his work, although his art can also be found in major museums around the world.

Jorge Castillo
Jorge Castillo, painter and sculptor, was born on June 16, 1933, in Pontevedra. Only one year after his birth his family emigrated to Argentina for political reasons. Castillo spent his childhood and youth in Buenos Aires. He tried to migrate to Paris, but due to a lack of economic resources, he was established in Spain. He soon came into contact with the art critic José María Moreno Galván, who admired his work and introduced him to the Madrid artistic circles. In 1958, he started selling his drawings at the gallery in Biosca and the painter Antonio Saura bought several of them. The following year, he exhibited his works on paper and watercolors at the Altamira Fine Art gallery in Madrid. In 1960, he was selected for the São Paulo Art Biennial in Brazil. Thereafter, he exhibited his work internationally in galleries and museums in New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Paris, Lisbon, Turin, Hanover, Dusseldorf and Geneva. He has participated in the Venice Biennale in 1964 and 1976 and 1970, performed a solo exhibition at the Nationalgalerie Berlin, the first major exhibition in a museum. In 1964, Castillo won the International Drawing Prize in Darmstadt, Germany and 1975, Darmstadt Prize for Painting. Works of Jorge Castillo are at the Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne, the Museu Fundación Juan March, the National Galleries in Edinburgh and Berlin, the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, the Kunsthalle Bremen, the Albertina Museum Vienna, the National Library of Spain and the Guggenheim in New York. Since the early 1980s, Castillo has lived in New York, where he was commissioned to create public sculptures in La Coruña, Messina and Barcelona.

The tapestry is inscribed with woven ‘Salvador Dalí’ lower right Genre: Surrealism Subject: people, architecture rendering Medium: textile Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989) Salvador Dali is considered as the greatest original artist of the surrealist art movement and one of the greatest masters of art of the twentieth century. Dali began to study art at the Royal Academy of Art in Madrid. He was expelled twice and never took the final examinations. His opinion was that he was more qualified than those who should have examined him. In 1928 Dali went to Paris where he met the Spanish painters Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro. He established himself as the principal figure of a group of surrealist artists grouped around Andre Breton, who was something like the theoretical "schoolmaster" of surrealism. Years later Breton turned away from Dali accusing him of support of fascism, excessive self-presentation and financial greediness. By 1929 Dali had found his personal style that should make him famous - the world of the unconscious that is recalled during our dreams. The surrealist theory is based on the theories of the psychologist Dr. Sigmund Freud. Recurring images of burning giraffes and melting watches became the artist's surrealist trademarks. Along with Rene Magritte his is considered the greatest of the Surrealists. His great craftsmanship allowed him to execute his paintings in a nearly photo realistic style. No wonder that the artist was a great admirer of the vintage Italian Renaissance painter Raphael. Meeting Gala was the most important event in the artist's life and decisive for his future career. She was a Russian immigrant and ten years older than Dali. When he met her, she was married to Paul Eluard. In 1933 Salvador Dali had his first one-man show in New York. One year later he visited the U.S. for the first time supported by a loan of US$500 from Pablo Picasso. To evade World War II, Dali chose the U.S.A. as his permanent residence in 1940. He had a series of spectacular exhibitions, among others a great retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has worked in paining, sculpture, tapestry, Daum glass and prints. Dali became the darling of the American High Society. Celebrities like Jack Warner or Helena Rubinstein gave him commissions for portraits. His artworks became a popular trademark and besides painting he pursued other activities - jewelry and dated clothing designs for Coco Chanel or film making with Alfred Hitchcock. In 1948 Dali and Gala returned to Europe, spending most of their time either in their residence in Ligate/Spain or in Paris/France or in New York.
