Kees van Dongen
"In the Cafe -La Garconne Series, " a Color Pochoir

1925

About the Item

This color pochoir from the La Garconne Series was done in 1925 on Arches paper No. 738/750 depicting a couple sitting at a cafe. Pochoir or stencil has been used to print limited edition art in the late 19th c. in Paris. This technique is the predecessor to the silkscreen printing process also known as serigraphy. Basically, the inks are passed through a cut out flat form. If multiple colors are required, the artist creates multiple stencils or cut out forms for which the ink is passed through onto a paper that is placed underneath the stencil. Archivally framed with 12k white gold; white gold fillet, silk mat, and museum glass. Paper Size: 9 3/4" x 7" Image Size: 8 3/4" x 6 1/4" Frame Size: 19 1/2" x 17" Small Artist Bio: Kees van Dongen (b. 1877, Delfshaven – d. 1968 Monte Carlo) is considered a Fauvist, but his style is still nevertheless closely related to the German Expressionists. He is appreciated for his unique coloring, especially in his portraits but also in his likenesses and landscapes. Kees van Dongen died on May 28, 1968, in Monte Carlo.
