Marc Chagall
Le Bouquet de l'Artiste, cover of Derrière le Miroir

1964

About the Item

Marc Chagall Cover for Derriere le Miroir, 1964 is a vibrant cover detailing the artists whimsical rendering of a man gently falling from the sky, with the image of a women reflected through his body, his arms spread towards his sides as he glides gently towards the bottom of the image. Houses painted in various tints of green in the background provide the image a sense of depth, showing us that the falling man is much closer in the foreground. A large bouquet of flowers in Chagall’s traditional style float abstractly in the top right corner, a small yellow bird perched in the middle as it faces in profile to the right. Chagall’s mastery of scaling and perspective have created a cover that delicately reveals his talents and signature styles. French for “Behind the Mirror,” Derrière Le Miroir was a publication that ran from 1946 to 1982, featuring prints by the era’s most celebrated Modernists at a fraction of their usual cost. Produced by Galerie Maeght in Paris, the publication was dedicated to making art widely accessible at a time when many exiled artists and creative thinkers had just returned to France at the end of World War II. With lithographs by artists including Alexander Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, and Joan Miró, each issue of Derrière Le Miroir was non-editioned and unsigned—creating unprecedented accessibility to works by these artists. Created in 1961, Marc Chagall Le Bouquet de l'Artiste, cover of Derrière le Miroir, 1964 is a color lithograph on Arches paper and is from an unsigned and unknown edition size. By Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall L'oranger (The Orange Tree), 1975 delicately illustrates an outing between two young lovers as the idle in an orchard. Though their faces are muted, detailed in a lighter color grey so that their facial features aren’t so pronounced, the young man stares in profile, gazing down at his partner with admiration in his eye. His visible left hand gingerly touches her arm, a subtle gesture of intimacy. The woman in the image faces the viewer directly, soft features gazing ahead of her as she leans into her partner. Clutched in her hands is a wire basket filled with the surrounding flora, fauna, and fruit. A small, yellow goat...
