Presse Ludovico Mirri Mercante d’Quadri incentro al Palazzo Bernini a Roma No.42

About the Item

Presse Ludovico Mirri Mercante d’Quadri incontro al Palazzo Bernini a Roma No.42 is from a series of original engravings published by Lodovico Mirri in the late 18th century and engraved by the Italian print maker Marco Gregorio Carloni ( 1742-1796 ). These copper engravings were based on the drawings made by Francesco Smuglewicz ( 1745-1807 ) of the frescoes which had been uncovered in the ruins of Nero’s House of Gold ‘ Domus Aureus ‘ situated between the Palatine and Esquiline Hills and designed by architects Severus and Celer after the great fire that destroyed Rome. This album of engravings …Vesrgia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture….was published in the late eighteenth century depicting the ‘al fresco’ and ‘al stucco’ murals of Nero’s Domus Aureus. In 1480, practically forgotten, the Domus was excavated, and its subterranean passages and rooms thereafter became known as ‘le grotte’ (cave). Many of its original frescoes survived, and their motifs and ancient style of ornamentation, called ‘grotteschi’ (grotesque) after ‘grotte’, became extremely popular during the Renaissance, influencing many prominent artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, Ghirlandaio, and Pinturicchio. This original engraving is in good condition with a little bit of ragged edges and a natural crease in the center margins. Paper size 24 x 28.50 image 20 x 22

  • Safety Pin from George Nama's suite " Tight Rope " 1974
    By George Nama
    Located in Paonia, CO
Safety Pin by American artist George Nama is from ” Tightrope ” a suite of ten lino-cuts published by Monument Press 1974. We see a stark image of a large safety pin with a wire binding it’s movement which changes the viewers concept of what they think they are perceiving. In this series of ten lino-cuts Nama takes ordinary household objects and makes them inoperable by wrapping a wire around the workable part of the object and presenting one object at a time. There seems to be a sense of humor and at the same time profundity with each image. All copies are individually signed and numbered by the artist. This is copy number 5/50 and is touched by hand with watercolor on Arches cover stock paper and printed by Monument Press in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This print is in excellent condition with the first two letters of the title having been smudged by the artist when he hand wrote it in pencil on the lower left side of the print. George Allen Nama was born in Homestead near Pittsbugh, Pennsylvania in 1939. In the 1960’s he was part of an international artistic circle in Paris while working at the Atelier 17 with William Stanley Hayter...

  • Phillips Screwdriver (Jim Dine 30 Bones of My Body portfolio) tool dry point
    By Jim Dine
    Located in New York, NY
The hand tool is undoubtedly Jim Dine’s most iconic motif. Meticulously catalogued in rows like scientific specimens or sketched individually, hammers, awls, brushes, saws and screwdrivers assume a visceral symbolism. Curvilinear handles evoke the contours of limbs or bones, and even metal points and blades seem organic under Dine’s thoughtful hand. In this series of dry point prints...
