His creative focus was first realized through the lens of music. His father was a gifted singer and drummer in a gospel choir. He introduced Evans to guitar lessons at the age of 4. His family settled in Georgia and he began to draw more upon his artistic instincts in high school. His mother, who was a teacher by profession, reinforced and supported his creative ability by allowing him to help design her classroom bulletin boards each year. By the time Evans was graduating, he had not only gained confidence to pursue his passion, but also gained recognition as a talented artist at Griffin High School. In 1986, he was accepted to the Art Institute of Atlanta where he studied Fashion Illustration with the intention of advancing his drawing and painting skills. After college, Evans pursued a number of odd jobs working for large and small design firms, but he never felt satisfied as he could not achieve the freedom he was yearning for as an independent artist. So in 1994, he had his first successful exhibition at the juried Black Arts Festival in Atlanta. He was supported by his friends and family in this venture. Soon, he participated as an exhibiting artist at the New York Art Expo where he was introduced to new collectors and clients. As his independent career progressed, his work was exhibited in numerous venues and galleries where he received national and international acclaim. Maurice Evans' art is featured in many prestigious galleries and institutions all over the world. His artistic creativity is expressed through a diverse mixture of photography and art; his imagery revealing elements of abstract expressions, graceful forms and bold colors.

Bearden grew up in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City and attended New York University where he received a degree in mathematics. Following graduation, Bearden turned his attention to art, pursuing further studies with George Grosz at the Art Students League. The artist served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. After leaving the Army, Bearden used funds from the GI Bill to travel to Europe for six months to study art history and philosophy at the Sorbonne. During this trip, Bearden had the opportunity to meet Henri Matisse, Georges Braque and Joan Miro, all of who had a strong influence on his artwork. Bearden’s work on canvas and collages expressed the complexities of rural Black America. “My intention is to reveal through pictorial complexities of the life I know,” he said. He integrated scenes from his childhood in North Carolina and from New York City, including many rituals and social customs. Another theme throughout his work was music. Bearden grew up surrounded by musicians and loved jazz and blues. Romare Bearden’s artwork can be found in numerous permanent collections around the country including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Retrospective exhibitions of Bearden’s art have been held by The Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte; the Museum of Modern Art; the Detroit Institute; and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
