Mimmo Rotella, Le Luci della citta 2005 Slashed silk-screen print on canvas Edition of 60 Signed and numbered on the lower left 124 x 86 cm Mimmo Rotella is an Italian artist and poet known for his collages made from torn advertising posters, which he calls "double décollages". Born October 7, 1918 in Catanzaro, Italy, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples before settling in Rome in 1945 and getting closer to Lettrism. Alongside Raymond Hains, Jacque Villeglé and François Dufrêne, he became one of the Affichistes, a group of artists considered a precursor of Street art. His first solo exhibition was organized in 1951 at the Galleria Chiurazzi in Rome, then in the same year, he received a Fulbright scholarship, thanks to which he went to the University of Kansas City. In 1961, he was invited by Pierre Restany to join the New Realism movement, which included among its members the artists Yves Klein, Arman and Jean Tinguely. In 1964, he represented Italy at the Venice Biennale. He died on January 8, 2006 in Milan, Italy at the age of 87.
