Philips Galle
Nemesis - Original Etching by Philips Galle - 1605

1605

About the Item

Nemesis is an original burin by the old master Galle Philips (Haarlem, 1537-Antwerp, 1612), the plate n. 20 from the series "De deis gentium imagines iconical, aeneis tabulis for Philipp.Galle exaratae; et variis distichis ab Hug. Illustrated fable", Antwerp, 1581. Our specimen is printed on laid paper, glued on secondary support, trimmed within the impression. Inscriptions: in the lower margin "NEMESIS / Trux Nemesis ut iacto cites lightning flamma / Mortalesq docet reddere cuiq fuum." Bibliography: F.W.H. Hollstein, Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts ca. 1450–1700 [volume VII] Fouceel – Gole (Amsterdam 1953), p.79, nos. 352–380 (for the entire series); Belgica typographica 1541–1600 (Nieuwkoop 1994), IV, p.538 no. 1206; Fortune: "all is but fortune", catalog for an exhibition held at the Folger Shakespeare Library, 18 January – 10 June 2000 (Washington, DC & Seattle 2000), p.36 (for Nemesis); Manfred Sellink and Marjolein Leesberg, The new Hollstein Dutch & Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts 1450–1700. Philips Galle, part III (Rotterdam 2001), pp. 155–174 nos. 448–477 (for the entire series; p. 158, n. 468 for Nemesis); Andrew Pettegree and Malcolm Walsby, Netherlandish books: books published in the Low Countries and Dutch books published abroad before 1601 (Leiden & Boston 2011), p.529 no. 12149. The series depicting ancient gods was engraved by Philips Galle starting from his original drawings. The Latin verses accompaning the images on the lower margin, are due to the humanist Hugo Favolius (Middelboug, 1523-Antwerp, 1585) and were written for the occasion (they have not been found in any printed publication). The series consists of an engraved title page, an introduction in Latin, written by Philips Galle and dedicated to Carolus de Lathem, assistant to the court of Emperor Matthias of Habsburg and viceroy of the Netherlands from 1577 to 1581; and 29 engraved plates. Two editions of the work are known, the first of 1581, due to Philips Galle, the second by Theodoor Galle and built after 1605. In the second edition, to which this sheet is probably attributable, the title page was replaced, added an indication of the intended use for the young artists and numbered individual tables. Together with Themis, Ate, Tyche, Heimarmene and the Morai, the Greek goddess Nemesis embodied an aspect of justice, in particular, the punitive one, playing the role of dispenser of atonement for the malevolent actions performed by men. It is represented here, bearing in its hands some iconographic attributes; wingless, as instead occurs in other depictions, proceeding towards a dark cave, he carries the bridle of a horse in his right hand, associated with Nemesis in the emblem CLXXIII of the Alciato, while on the left it bears a meter and a burning torch; the verses underline the negativity of his figure. The horse's bite refers to the ability to direct the animal along the right path and the meter the possibility of judgment. The specimen has a missing part on the lower right corner and is glued on secondary support, but is characterized by a good impression and freshness of the sign. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price. The shipping may require additional handling days to require the licence according to the final destination of the artwork.

  • Tatoo-Shave-Haircut
    By Reginald Marsh
    Located in New York, NY
Reginald Marsh (1898-1934), Tattoo-Shave-Haircut, etching, 1932. Signed, titled (“Tattoo-Haircut-Shave”), dedicated (“for Arnold Newman”), and annotated (“Fourth State. First of Two Prints”). Reference: Sasowsky 140. On cream wove paper. In very good condition, with small margins (as trimmed, slightly irregularly, by the artist) (slight foxing in margins), remains of prior hinging verso; 9 7/8 x 9 3/4, the sheet 10 15/16 x 10 5/8 inches; archival matting. A very fine rich black impression; we have not seen impressions of comparable quality on the market. Provenance: Estate of Arnold Newman. Arnold Newman (1918-2006) was one of the great 20th Century masters of photography, and a friend of many leading artists; it is appears that Marsh took special care in printing this impression for Newman. Sasowsky calls for 10 states of Tattoo-Shave, based largely on Marsh’s notes. But the states are not clearly delineated (e.g., his States 3 and 4, one proof each, are characterized by Marsh as “Engraving added”; no information is given for State 5). The design for the print was complete in the first state, and subsequent state changes were not, apparently, major. This impression does not appear to differ in etching lines from the final state impression shown in Sasowsky. Its inscription (as a Fourth State, by Marsh), as well as its rich inking and quality, attest to its being a proof before the edition (of about 34 impressions), but the state of this print (and, presumably of many of the other several proof impressions) cannot at this time be stated with confidence. Marsh printed this impression personally (we recall his famous answer to a question about the size of his editions: “Since I do practically all my own printing, I do not limit the edition. The buyer limits the edition – he rarely buys, I rarely print”). Tattoo-Shave-Haircut depicts a scene in the Bowery, a section of New York’s Lower East Side, during the Great Depression. The building and train structures in the top half of the print recall Piranesi’s Carceri...
