Robert Morris
Hand Signed European Poster

1995

About the Item

Robert Morris (1931-2018) The Mind/Body Problem (Hand signed and dated), 1995 Offset lithograph 33 × 23 1/2 inches 83.8 × 59.7 cm Edition of 250 (this is a uniquely hand signed print, aside from the regular unsigned edition) Signed and dated '97 in black marker by Robert Morris; unnumbered Unframed Published by Deichtorhallen, Hamburg, Germany This work was acquired from the estate of artist and noted art collector Rick Collar. This limited edition hand signed offset lithograph, published on the occasion of a 1995 German museum exhibition, reprises Robert Morris' historic and controversial advertisement for his New York Castelli-Sonnabend exhibition from April 6-27, 1974. According to Wikiart, the original poster was part of Robert Morris' "continuing dialogue with the artist Lynda Benglis, with whom he had previously collaborated on film projects. In the ad, featured in Artforum magazine, Morris is seen from the waist up, flexing his muscles and outfitted only in S & M gear: a German Army helmet, aviator sunglasses, steel chains, and a spiked collar. While striking in itself, Morris's hypermasculine self-portrait is important for prompting an image that gave rise to a huge controversy on the pages of Artforum: a centerfold ad in that same magazine featuring a photograph of Benglis, naked but for a pair of sunglasses, a diamond earring, and sporting an enormous dildo. While Morris's image barely raised an eyebrow, "the Benglis ad" was met with an angry uproar that dramatically illustrated the sexual double standard. Interestingly, one of the loudest voices of condemnation against was the art critic Rosalind Krauss, who had actually photographed Morris for the Castelli-Sonnabend poster; along with other editors of Artforum, Krauss called the ad "an object of extreme vulgarity" that succeeded in "brutalizing ourselves and, we think, our readers."..."

Patti Smith Voice Choices (hand signed by Patti Smith) from the Gotham Book Mart collection, 2001 Offset print broadsheet, hand signed in ink on the cover 14 × 11 inches Unframed This cover, hand signed by Patti Smith, is from "Voice Choices" - a feature of the legendary Village Voice magazine, dated April 2001 - five months before 9/11/2001 when everything changed in the downtown Manhattan scene. A terrific collectible for Patti Smith fans. Provenance is superb as it was acquired from the sale of the collection of Edward Gorey and Gotham Book Mart. The Gotham Book Mart was a famous Midtown Manhattan bookstore and cultural landmark that operated from 1920 to 2007. The business was located first in a small basement space on West 45th Street near the Theater District, then moved to 51 West 47th Street, then spent many years at 41 West 47th Street within the Diamond District in Manhattan, New York City, before finally moving to 16 East 46th Street. Beyond merely selling books, the store virtually played as a literary salon, hosting meetings of the Finnegans Wake Society, the James Joyce Society, poetry and author readings, art exhibits, and more. It was known for its distinctive sign above the door which read, "Wise Men Fish Here" (sign created by artist John Held Jr.). The store specialized in poetry, literature...
