Roger Perot
Cycles Peugeot

1931

About the Item

Perot, Roger. Cycles Peugeot, 1931. Color lithograph Linen backed. Peugeot was a major advertiser in France between the wars, commissioning innumerable posters to advertise both their cars and their bicycles. After the First World War their posters were consistently marked with a distinct modernist feel, to show they were a contemporary company keeping up with the times. Pérot constructs the image using three separate planes: foreground, middle and background. Each plane is delineated by one of the colors of the French flag, reinforcing the identity of Peugeot as a French company.

The poem below the figure of Summer reads: "Shimmer of heat from the hot dust road. Cold is the mud where the fern grows deep. Flower-scented atmosphere- peaceful sleep.
