In 2015 artist Richard Prince set the art world abuzz with a new series of images he appropriated without consent. This time, Prince gleaned images from Instagram, particularly those generated by the Suicide Girls. Prince's images were exhibited at the Gagosian Gallery in New York and sold out quickly, fetching a hefty price of $90,000 each. The founder of the Suicide Girls, Missy Suicide, expressed disappointment in Prince's actions, stating that it felt like a violation from someone who didn't understand the value of their art. However, she acknowledged that this incident of 'theft' sparked a long-overdue conversation about appropriation in the art world.
In response to Prince's unauthorized use of their imagery, the Suicide Girls released their own version of the images. The prints included a tagline at the bottom that reads "true art," distinguishing it from Prince's appropriated Instagram piracy. These authorized Suicide Girls' prints were available for a limited time as an open edition. Great collector's item!
