General Idea
Hot Property!

1977

About the Item

General Idea was formed in 1967 as a collective of three Canadian artists in Toronto, Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal and AA Bronson. Over the next 30 years, the trio made a remarkable and inimitable contribution to post-modern art, shaping new expectations and perspectives. With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social issues including consumerism, media consumption, the cult of the artist, and AIDS. General Idea were both prolific and multi-disciplinary (long before it became de rigueur) creating works in a wide range of media including photography, sculpture, painting, mail art, video, installations, multiples, and performance. This early and iconic screenprint was created in tandem with a 1977 performance at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in Manitoba. Along with "Going Thru The Motions", "Hot Property" was a staged rehearsal for the 1984 General Idea Beauty Pageant. This conceptual parody was a 20-year running concept that was realized in various mediums and iterations. “Hot Property” was among a handful of 1970s performances that utilized the gallery audience as a feedback loop, acting as a studio audience during the performance’s cinematic proceedings. In this performance, the audience was provided with a "safety" exit plan in case the pavilion catches fire. “Hot Property” was a performance, a pseudo film, and also this exhibition poster...a truly multimedia work. "Hot Property!" Canada, 1977 Screenprint on paper From an edition of 300 44"H 34"W (sheet) Very good condition.

  • Spheres of Influence
    By Lawrence Weiner
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Lawrence Weiner (b. 1942) is one of the most-distinctive American conceptual artists. His philosophy and aesthetic developed concurrently to Sol LeWitt yet Weiner has focused far more on (text-based) installation - typically in public spaces. Exhibited at Leo Castelli during the 1970's, Weiner has been an institutional darling with major exhibitions at most of the world's top museums. As a significant portion of his output is temporary installation, his multiples (which are few and far between) are sought-after and cherished by collectors. This rare silkscreen was published in conjunction with Weiner's solo exhibition "SPHERES OF INFLUENCE...

  • Art Attack on AIDS
    By Keith Haring
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Keith Haring (1958–1990) is one of the most celebrated and widely recognized (graffiti) artists of all time. His iconic imagery emerged on the subway walls of New York City in the early 1980s, breaking the barrier between high art and street art almost overnight. Haring’s art was accessible to the masses, both physically and visually, without pretence or irony and full of optimism. Haring’s distinctive, cartoon-like figures are a defining motif throughout his oeuvre. Thick, confident lines and simple stylized forms create a visual language that is instantly recognizable and accessible to all levels of viewership. Often combined with hypnotic and vibrating hues, Haring's aesthetic evokes a sense of light-heartedness, even when dealing with serious subject matter (such as AIDS or drug addiction) As Haring established himself in the art world, elements of advocacy increased throughout his practice, with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS awareness. A testimony to his activism, this screenprint was created for the Art Attack On AIDS...
