Heavily influenced by the color theory of Josef Albers, Richard Hamilton, and Patrick Caulfield's work, Calvert uses color relationships to evoke emotion. He pairs this emotional response with everyday objects, such as the ottoman in "Subtle Was Rarely An Option," to transport viewers to a fluid past whose meaning is subject to revision by new knowledge and experiences.
