Artist's Proof
Irwin Hasen (1918-2015) was a cartoonist and comic-book artist who drew, and helped create, “Dondi,” the widely syndicated comic strip about a lovable, wide-eyed World War II orphan
“Dondi,” which was conceived and originally written by Gus Edson and illustrated by Mr. Hasen, won the hearts of generations of Americans. It ran from 1955 through 1986, and at its peak appeared in more than 100 newspapers. With a classical drawing education as a child, Mr. Hasen began promoting his drawings as a teenager during the Depression to make money for his mother. In the 1940s he became a comic-book artist, contributing to the adventures of the “Flash,” the “Green Lantern,” the “Green Hornet” and others, as well as an adaptation of the radio and television series “The Goldbergs.”

Al Díaz’s career spans five decades. Born and raised Puerto Rican in New York City, by age 15 he was an influential first-generation subway graffiti artist known as “BOMB-ONE.” His friendship and artistic collaboration with high school schoolmate Jean-Michel Basquiat on SAMO, (a late 70s Avant-garde graffiti tag project) has been noted often in contemporary art history. Díaz later contributed percussion to numerous musical recordings and performances, including Basquiat’s historic 1983 record, “Beat Bop,” (considered to be one of the earliest hip-hop albums). Díaz is sought-after as an expert of New York City counterculture art. He appears often in publications, as a highlighted speaker for a variety of panel discussions at universities and museums (including Smithsonian Institution, the Brooklyn Museum, The New School and Christie’s Education), and has been featured in several films, including Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat, BBC’s American Masters — Basquiat: Rage to Riches and Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child. In 2018, Díaz authored "SAMO …SINCE 1978", an in-depth, color illustrated history of the street art legacy that he began with Basquiat in the late 70s. A notebook that Díaz made with Basquiat in his teens is currently held in the collection of the Yale University Beinecke Library.Category

- AS FAR AS A VIEW - Folded Tapestry Collage of Scenic Landscapes w/ Palm TreesLocated in Signal Mountain, TNAS FAR AS A VIEW, is part of a series of works that consider the decorative and escapist role of the landscape in the home. When seeking beauty in the world to distract us, delight us, and bring us into our own world, we seek something that stirs within us a memory or a dream. Traditionally, tapestries are a storytelling media as well as décor. This particular work is constructed from commercially printed tapestries acquired from a Chinese supplier during the pandemic. These tell a story of arrested, yet ample, desire. On one side of the piece we see a sunrise from a beach with palm trees. Gently folded over to the right is a second tapestry. In this the artist has chose to expose the desaturated backside which obscures slightly the third tapestry landscape of beach scene around midday. It brings to mind the passage of time much like time lapse photography...Category
