About the Item

JOHN PARKINSON (1567-1650). Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris. Published by Thrale. London, 1629. Woodcuts by Christopher Switzer. Later hand color. 110 woodcuts. "...a Garden of all sorts of pleasant flowers which our English are will permit to be noursed up...". Parkinson's work is among the most famous English gardening books of the seventeenth century. Perhaps based on his own garden, it was practical from the point of view of the gardener and described nearly 1,000 plants, mostly exotics. Though it makes little appeal to the scientific botanist, it does give a very complete picture of the English garden at the beginning of the seventeenth century, and in such a delightful, homely, literary style that gardeners cherish it even to the present day. The title Paradisi in Sole is a pun on the author's name: "park in sun". Reference: Magnificent Botanical Books. Sotheby’s. London, 1987. The Illustration of Plants & Gardens 1500-1850. Kaden. London, 1982
