About the Item

The Book of Poultry J. W. Ludlow, artist Lewis Wright (1838-1905), editor Cassell, Petter & Galpin London, Paris, New York, 1880 Vincent Brooks Day & Son Chromolithography 10.75” x 8.25” Man’s fascination with the domestic animals has spanned many centuries. Admired for both strength and beauty, the horse was domesticated for both its capacity for work and pleasure. Livestock became the staple of life with poultry, pigs, cows and sheep contributing to food stores and clothing. This work hopes to familiarize the reader with each breed, old and new. Set in the barnyard for the most part, the animals stand in natural behavior presumably showing their best confirmation. The information beneath the image includes the owner name and, in many cases, information on prizes won. Found in this work is another splendid example of chromolithography. Printing in color on stone was a remarkable technique, developed in America, for creating rich colors in a very painterly fashion. It was most successfully used with lush backgrounds and painterly subjects.
