About the Item
La petite marine -- Souvenir de Medway. (Little Seascape, a Remembrance of the Medway). 1879. Etching, drypoint, false biting, aquatint, and stop-out. Bourcard-Goodfriend catalog 153. state .vi. 6 1/2 x 8 9/16 (sheet 9 3/8 x 11 1/2). A very fine impression of the completed state on tan 'Van Gelder' laid paper with full margins. The left-hand platemark has been reinforced with Japanese mulberry paper. Signed with the red owl stamp, signed and annotated 'épreuve d'artist' (artist's proof) in pencil. Housed with uv glass in a 13 x 14 1/2 gold and grey wood frame.
In this state, the lines in the sky have been burnished or covered with aquatint, as have both the water and the terrain. Stop out has been used on the water, and in a few spots on the land, to show reflected light.
Sometimes Buhot soaked his sheets in turpentine, an ink-dissolving solvent that gave the printed image a soft, uncanny sense of moisture in the air. This proof would appear to be one of those impressions.
The River Medway is a river in South East England. It rises in the High Weald, Sussex, and flows through Tonbridge, Maidstone, and the Medway conurbation in Kent before emptying into the Thames Estuary near Sheerness, a total distance of 70 miles. About 13 miles of the river lies in Sussex, with the remainder being in Kent.

Félix Hilaire Buhot
Buhot’s prints were made at a time of renewed interest in original printmaking (especially etching), which was rapidly becoming more popular than reproductive engraving. His etchings were singled out for praise as early as 1874 by the preeminent critic Philippe Burty, who admired the artist’s belles épreuves (beautiful proofs)— a term Burty promoted to denote rare, superbly inked impressions printed by the artist himself. By the 1880s Buhot had become one of the best-known and most collected printmakers of his day. Buhot’s renown extended well beyond his own country, and he also enjoyed critical acclaim and strong support for his prints in the United States. In 1888 the New York print dealer Frederick Keppel (1845-1912) gave Buhot his first one-man exhibition, which was quite successful. In addition to Keppel, Buhot became friends with two prominent late nineteenth-century American collectors who amassed large numbers of the artist’s prints: Samuel P. Avery (1822-1904) of New York collected over 300 prints and George A. Lucas (1824-1909) of Baltimore owned some 200 prints. Beginning in 1911, another large collection was formed by Albert H. Wiggin (1868-1951) of Boston, who bought over 150 impressions. Today, these collections can be found in, respectively, the New York Public Library, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Boston Public Library.

Ludgate Hill is a street that runs west from St. Paul's Churchyard to Ludgate Circus (built in 1864), and from there becomes Fleet Street. The Ludgate Hill railway station, between Water Lane and New Bridge Street, is a station of the London, Chatham, and Dover Railway. It was closed before World War II and the railway bridge and viaduct between Holborn Viaduct and Blackfriars stations was demolished in 1990 to enable the construction of the City Thameslink railway station in a tunnel. This also involved the regrading of the slope of Ludgate Hill at the junction. About halfway up Ludgate Hill is St Martin, Ludgate church. This was physically joined to the Ludgate.
