About the Item

In "The Catbird Seat" Larry Welo give us an aerial view of a baseball diamond on a bright sunny day. The players in the field cast long shadows across the green grass of the baseball diamond. "The Catbird Seat" is an American English idiomatic phrase used to describe an enviable position, often in terms of having the upper hand or greater advantage in any type of dealing among parties. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first recorded usage occurred in a 1942 humorous short story by James Thurber titled "The Catbird Seat,"[2] which features a character, Mrs. Barrows, who likes to use the phrase. Another character, Joey Hart, explains that Mrs. Barrows must have picked up the expression from Red Barber, the baseball broadcaster, and that to Barber "sitting in the catbird seat" meant "'sitting pretty,' like a batter with three balls and no strikes on him." This image is an early proof of the final image, High and Outside Larry Welo (American, b. 1951) Larry Welo has been creating etchings since the early 1970’s. A graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, Welo operated a studio in Minneapolis until moving to Wisconsin where he currently lives. His etchings cover a broad range of topics and offer witty perceptions about the world which sets him apart from many other artists. Scenes from small Midwestern towns, spirited cats, images of baseball diamonds or bicyclists — all of these subjects are fertile territory for Welo’s wit and skill as a printmaker. His prints on baseball themes are included in the Sports Art Archives at the Butler Institute of Art and in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, as well as corporate, private and university collections in the Midwest.
