Mark Pearce then studied at The Norwich School of Art and after a successful career as a graphic designer in London, Mark moved back to Cumbria in 2006. He works from his Ravenglass home, creating vibrant images using a variety of media: Painting with watercolour, gouache, pastels and oils, and as a printmaker his techniques include reduction lino/woodcuts, dry point, etching and carborundum printing. Mark A Pearce says, “It’s all about noticing things”. Here in Ravenglass the mountains almost reach the shore, and the three rivers meet to form a perfect estuary, so there is a huge variety of landscape to notice. I make pictures to share the excitement of a light effect, a composition or a colour combination. I particularly enjoy the discipline of multi colour printing; it forces me to think precisely about the nature of what I see and how to put it across. At school I spent most of my time in the art department. I then went on to do a one year foundation course at Carlisle College of Art. It was here that I learnt the art of printmaking and then continued my studies at the Norwich School of Art doing a degree in graphic design. Keen to move to London I found my first job as a graphic designer with John Nash and Friends and my second with Michael Peters and Partners. I went on to win a D&AD (Design and Art Directors Club of Great Britain) silver award for the very first greeting stamps issued by the Royal Mail. These featured smiles from the likes of Dennis the Menace and the Cheshire Cat. I also won a BBC design award which included a number of appearances on TV. In the 90’s I set up the design consultancy Springpoint with my business partner Fiona Gilmore. There were eventually more than 30 of us in offices around the world and as design director I created and worked on brands including Vodafone, the BBC, Martel, Birds Eye, the Hong Kong Government and Unilever. After the sale of Springpoint I tried my hand at a nightclub. This was based in the famous Raymond Review bar but this proved too much of a challenge and ended in financial disaster so I returned to Cumbria.

  • Sailing at Blakeney Point, Contemporary Linocut Seascape Print, Sailing Boat Art
    By Joanna Padfield
    Located in Deddington, GB
Sailing at Blakeney Point is inspired by summer sailing trips from Morston to Blakeney Point in North Norfolk. In the foreground are flowers and plants typically found along the marches of the Norfolk coast. A Sailing barge is sailing back towards Morston and Blakeney Point can be seen in the distance . Jo Padfield, printmaker and artist, is available for sale online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Jo Padfield is an artist based in rural Norfolk - I love the natural world and my work celebrates nature and the natural environment, using bright vibrant colours and bold eye catching shapes and patterns. After studying at Norwich School of Art I went on to study and work in architecture. As my path in design continued, I have developed my love of colour and graphics in print making to create linocut prints. I like the process of cutting fresh lino with sharp tools and the anticipation of peeling paper off an inked block...
