SPORT, SPIRIT, SPLENDOR Signed Lithograph New England Town, Charity Run Athletes

1995

About the Item

In 1995, Michel Delacroix became the Official Artist of the Special Olympics World Games and was joined for the unveiling of the splendid commemorative lithograph ‘Sport. Spirit. Splendor' by Caroline Kennedy. This commissioned print edition, SPORT, SPIRIT, SPLENDOR features a depiction of community townspeople gathering by the flag pole at the town green to cheer on the colorfully dressed charity runners as they pass. In SPORT, SPIRIT, SPLENDOR a calming pink and blue horizon serves as the backdrop of this quaint New England town green landscape scene featuring a charity running event printed in shades of Autumn golden ochre, greens, brown. A prominent white steeple tops the terracotta brick town hall building, a red, white, and blue American flag and a dark blue and chrome yellow Special Olympics flag are visible on the center flagpole. SPORT, SPIRIT, SPLENDOR by the popular French artist Michel Delacroix is an original hand drawn, commemorative limited edition lithograph that was printed using traditional hand lithography techniques on archival Arches paper, 100% acid free. Michel Delacroix was born in 1933 on the Left Bank, in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, best known for its northeastern quartier Montparnasse. He started painting at the young age of seven just as the German Occupation of Paris began. Paris as it was during the Occupation is the Paris that appears in his paintings even today; there was a virtual absence of automobiles and street lights, the city was quite and isolated. His cityscapes display a simpler Paris of the past, of his boyhood rather than the urban metropolis of today. Delacroix was educated at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and spent years experimenting with several different painting styles until, at the age of 35, he began producing works in the Naïf tradition, his characteristic style. He rarely works "en plein air", allowing him to create his own sense of perspective that emphasizes the grandeur of the boulevards and at the same time highlights the intimacy of street corners. Throughout the course of his career, Delacroix has been honored with numerous awards including the Grand Prix des Amateurs d'Art, Paris (1973). The Grand Pris de la Cote d'Azur, Cannes (1976) and the Premier Prix de Sept Collines, Rome (1976). His work can be found in several public and private collections including the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain in Paris and the Musée International d'Art Naïf. Delacroix's paintings have been featured in over 300 solo exhibitions in the United States alone. He has had numerous one-man shows as well as group exhibitions all over Europe. Michel Delacroix well known for his naif, winsom style paintings and graphics combines building structures and fine details with rich color to express the lively, diverse activity of everyday life in the cities he paints. Print size - 38.25" x 27" unframed, fresh vivid colors, pencil signed by Michel Delacroix. Year -1995 Superb quality handmade limited edition lithograph, not a photo reproduction or digital print. Literature: Aerial Muse: The Art of Yvonne Jacquette by Hilarie Faberman (2002-01-29), 8. Yvonne Jacquette Biography: Yvonne Jacquette (1934 - 2023) was born on December 15, 1934 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and grew up in Stamford, Connecticut. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence from 1952 to 1955, when she moved to New York City. She continued to live and work in New York City, as well as in Searsmont, Maine. A flight to San Diego in 1969 sparked Jacquette’s interest in aerial views, after which she began flying in commercial airliners to study cloud formations and weather patterns. She soon started sketching and painting the landscape as seen from above, beginning a process that has developed into a defining element of her art. Her first nocturnal painting with an aerial perspective, East River View At Night (1978), inspired a lasting exploration of the effects of bright lights, reflections, and indistinct objects set against surrounding darkness. The city of New York was a special focus of Jacquette’s. In the 1980s and 1990s, she chartered planes from Teterborough Airport in New Jersey to circle the city while she sketched the scene below. She also worked from the Empire State Building, and, from 1974 through early 2001, often used empty offices or an enclosed deck at the World Trade Center. Jacquette painted aerial landscapes across the country, as well as city views in San Francisco, Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Vancouver, Tokyo, and New Orleans. After a trip to Hong Kong in 1990, she began incorporating composite viewpoints into her work, realizing that she could better express the city’s many layers of complexity by creating new spatial configurations through multiple perspectives. Since then, she continued to base her paintings on pastels made from direct observation, while frequently enlivening compositions through heightened color, repetition of certain elements, and manipulation of light, scale, and perspective. As she approached the rendering of space with greater freedom, her paintings became both more inventive and disjunctive, combining aspects of observation, memory, and imagination.  Jacquette participated in her first group show in New York City in 1962 and has been exhibiting steadily since. In 1965 she had a one-person exhibition at Swarthmore College, PA. In 1983, the St. Louis Art Museum organized her first major museum exhibition. A comprehensive retrospective, Aerial Muse: The Art of Yvonne Jacquette, originated at the Cantor Center for Visual Arts, Stanford University, CA in 2002 and traveled to Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, ME; Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Salt Lake City; and the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY. In 2008, the Museum of the City of New York organized Under New York Skies: Nocturnes by Yvonne Jacquette, which was shown concurrently with Street Dance, an exhibition of photography by her late husband, Rudy Burckhardt...
