About the Item

SAILBOATS is an original hand drawn lithograph by the renowned American Pop artist, Peter Max, printed in 1980 in an edition of 165, using traditional hand lithography techniques on archival Somerset paper, 100% acid free. SAILBOATS is a dreamy, abstract seascape portraying a colorful sunset scene expressed as a freely drawn black line composition with three Asian style sailboats sailing along the skyline; a bold red color sea touches the luminous aqua sky with a large reddish brown sun setting on the horizon line. Playful shapes in shades of yellow, blue, pink and green dance across the sky creating an energized cosmic feel and joyful mood for the viewer. Print size - 21.5 x 26 inches, unframed, dedicated and signed in black marker by Peter Max Edition size - 165, plus proofs Year published - 1980 Printer - JK Fine Art Editions Co. NY PETER MAX (German/American, b. 1937) Max and his family escaped Nazi Germany and fled to the Orient, immigrating to the United States in 1953. Exposed to the paintings of Buddhist monks as a child, Max continued to exhibit a strong fascination with Eastern mysticism throughout his career. He studied the teachings of Eastern mystics and began practicing yoga under Swami Satchidananda, developing a discipline that helped inform and mold his art work as well as many of his personal convictions in life. As he told Publishers Weekly: "What fascinates and drives me is that man and his acts are insignificant, microscopic in terms of the continual evolution of the universe . . . . "
