Sarah Duncan
Sarah Duncan is an artist based in Bristol. She studied textile design and then spent 10 years working within the Art Department in feature films. Duncan has passed her Masters's degree in print with distinction at the University of the West of England in Bristol. Duncan comments, “My practice is based on the natural world and my most recent work has focused on our relationship with the remote and inaccessible, notably the ocean and the cosmos. I am drawn to phenomena that appear on the surface to be constant and uniform but on further inspection reveal themselves to be unique, constantly in flux and ever-changing. An observation that may also apply to forms and light that are invisible to the naked eye. My prints seek to embed the humanly experienced physical world into the unknowable enormity of the cosmos. It shares the central aims of science in trying to make sense of our surroundings, but focuses on an emotional and embodied response rather than a purely intellectual one.” She further adds, “Perhaps due to slight agoraphobia, I am drawn to wilderness and large spaces, the gigantic and intangible. My efforts to capture these on paper are attempts to tame them and render them more familiar and accessible. My recent work has focused on the Earth, sky and water. These elements are immeasurably large, but the process of observing, selecting and reproducing a portion of them inside a frame makes that section more knowable whilst simultaneously revealing how unknowable the whole is. My practice is concerned with shifting an unstable body of matter, momentarily suspended in time.” Duncan quotes, “Many stars we see when viewing them through a telescope no longer exist. We are peering into the past, as illuminated by the old light dead and distant stars. Capturing this image with a print or drawing is magical. The same is true of the physical form of our terrestrial landscapes. I am interested in the forces that have shaped our planet and left their marks and traces upon the landscape. Rather than telescopy, research into these forces is inherent in walking through a landscape and responding to it through photography, sketching and note-taking.” She says that these records then become the starting point for a piece. The cyclical nature of landscape creation and erosion is echoed in her drawing, which has become less about the line and more concerned with the nature of layers. “By using layers of organic materials like charcoal, graphite, wax and chalk, to build up surfaces over the paper, and eroding portions of these layers through erasing, the drawings echo the creative forces behind the landscapes they represent,” says Duncan.

- Les Belles et La Bête I: The RehearsalBy Peter MiltonLocated in Middletown, NYResist ground etching and engraving on Rives heavyweight buff paper, 20 x 36 inches (508 x 914 mm), full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 103/160 in pencil, lower margin. Minor mat tone. A rich and finely printed impression of this complex and iconic work by Milton. Framed handsomely under Plexiglas with archival materials in a solid wood frame with silver finish. [Milton 98]. Milton states that in the evolution of his body of graphic work he found himself at point that necessitated the exertion of nerve in his subject matter. He found it imperative for growth to explore whether his compositions had previously been too polite, and through this process he experienced a great burst of artistic and psychic liberation. Milton refers to this awakening as a sort of adolescence, which he felt demanded a natural examination of mysteries of sexual awakening. Les Belles et La Bête...Category

- Les Belles et la Bête: Before the HuntBy Peter MiltonLocated in Middletown, NYResist ground etching and engraving on cream wove paper, 22 x 39 inches (558 x 990 mm), full margins. Signed, titled, dated, and numbered 27/160 in pencil, lower margin. With the blindstamp of the printer, Robert E. Townsend, in the lower left margin. A beautiful, richly inked impression of this highly detailed, large image. In very good condition with minor mat tone, extremely minor scattered light surface soiling, and one pin-point sized dot of brown discoloration on the lower left margin, recto, well outside of image area. [Milton 99]. Milton states that there is a metaphorical evolution at the root of his body of graphic work, and with Les Belles et la Bête, Before the Hunt, he found himself at a crossroads that he viewed as a sort of artistic adolescence, which he felt demanded a natural examination of mysteries of sexual awakening. The image is brimming with fantastical images and metaphors for the confrontation of sexual exploration; a Freudian analyst appears in the left of the image, scattered tableaus of paired figures...Category
