About the Item
Original linen-backed ‘FLYING TIGERS - A legend in air cargo;, aviation vintage poster for sale. This poster is part of The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Fly Now: The National Air and Space Museum Poster Collection.
This vintage poster features various types and ages of airplanes that were flown. The Constellation aircraft is also featured as well as the nose cone of a fighter plane.
The airline was named after World War II's Flying Tigers fighter unit. Their mission was unusual: They were mercenaries hired by China to fight against Japan. They were called the American Volunteer Group and later became known as the Flying Tigers. Though only in combat for less than seven months, the group became famous at the time for its ability to inflict outsize damage on Japan's better-equipped and more extensive aircraft fleet.
Flying Tigers flew air freight predominantly, with limited passenger charters. Founded in 1946, it was taken over by Federal Express in 1989
