About the Item

Michelle Stuart is an American artist whose work references a range of influences, from history to astronomy and botany, as well as her extensive travels to ancient archaeological sites. Stuart studied in Mexico, France, and at The New School for Social Research in New York. Since the 1960s, Stuart has created a multifaceted body of work including large-scale earth works, complex multi-media installations, earth drawings, encaustic paintings, sculptural objects, drawings and prints. The photographic image has been an ancillary part of her work in the past; it is currently the primary medium. Stuart has also written and published artist’s books. Stuart pioneered the utilization of organic mediums such as earth, wax, seeds, and plants to the vertical surface experience. These works that go beyond the bounds of traditional artistic resources articulate the complex processes through a language of exploration of both the physicality of materials and cultural and scientific issues not generally thought of in the vocabulary of art. The changes that take place in organic matter, the extinction series and the series on genetic variation, explore scientific issues that provide a new art vocabulary. Stuart has exhibited widely and her work can be found in museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the National Gallery of Art, Canberra, Australia. Stuart currently lives and works in New York City and Amagansett, New York.2500

    By Michael Graves (b.1934)
    Located in New York, NY
Michael Graves (July 9, 1934 – March 12, 2015) was an American architect. Identified as one of The New York Five, as well as Memphis Group, Graves was known first for his contemporary building designs and some prominent public commissions that became iconic examples of Postmodern architecture, such as the Portland Building and Denver Public Library. His recognition grew through designing domestic products sold by premium Italian housewares maker Alessi, and later low-cost new designs at stores such as Target and J. C. Penney in the United States. He was a representative of New Urbanism and New Classical Architecture and formerly designed postmodern buildings, and was recognized as a major influence in all three movements. Michael Graves was one of the most prominent and influential architects and designers of the late- 20th and early- 21st centuries. In his buildings and in his furniture and housewares, Graves embodied the essence of Postmodernism — a refined classicism inflected with a humanistic sense of joy. The Indiana-born Graves attended the University of Cincinnati’s architectural program and continued his studies at Harvard as well as at the American Academy in Rome. In 1962, he began teaching at Princeton, and remained there throughout his career. Following a seminal 1972 Museum of Modern Art group...

  • "Pillory, Charing Cross" by Rowlandson from "The Microcosm of London"
    By Thomas Rowlandson
    Located in Alamo, CA
"Pillory, Charing Cross" is an illustration (Plate 62) from "The Microcosm of London", published in London in 1809 by R Ackermann's Repository of Arts. The scene was created by one of the most famous British satirists and caricaturists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries' Georgian Period, Thomas Rowlandson, who drew the figures, while Augustus Charles Pugin drew the architecture. The plate was then created by Hill, Stadler and Bluck using a combination of aquatint and etching and was then hand colored with watercolor. Scenes illustrated in "The Microcosm of London" gives an accurate and often comical view of everyday life in London during the Regency Period of the early 19th century. While Pugin’s excellent architectural drawings capture the size and shape of the exterior as well as the interior of London’s principal buildings, Thomas Rowlandson’s insightful and often whimsical and satirical view of the city's inhabitants depicts the color and vitality of the late Georgian society, both rich and poor alike. This print depicts the "Pillory, Charing Cross", where criminals were brought and placed on display while secure in the stocks, as are seen in this print. A crowd is present in the square jeering at the prisoners. A statue of Charles I on horseback stands atop a very large pillar to the right. Shops with apartments are seen on the left. Young wealthy people frolic around and on a carriage on the right in front of the statue of King...
