Dr. Seuss, The Speck-Voice Was Talking!

About the Item

The Speck-Voice Was Talking! Lithograph on Somerset Paper - Limited Edition of 2500 Arabic Numbers Authorized Estate Edition 11.25" x 14.75" paper Ready to hang Adapted posthumously from the illustration for the 1954 book, Horton Hears a Who! Prior to introducing his iconic elephant in the 1940 book, Horton Hatches the Egg, Dr. Seuss had labored over the name choice. First called Osmere, then Bosco, then Humphrey, Ted finally chose Horton after his Dartmouth classmate, Horton Conrad. In the fall of 1953 Ted began work on Horton Hears a Who! Horton’s seminal proclamations: “I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant’s faithful one hundred percent.” and “a person’s a person no matter how small,” would forever define his character. To this day, Horton remains a lasting symbol of loyalty, equality, and faithfulness. DR. SEUSS (Theodor Seuss Geisel) Theodor "Ted" Seuss Geisel, most known by his pen name, Dr. Seuss, would often take different artistic genres and portray them in his inimitable style. Consider, for instance, the Cubism of The Rather Odd Myopic Woman, the Abstraction of The Joyous Leaping of Uncanned Salmon, and the Surrealism of Surly Cat Being Ejected. In a work such as Worm Burning Bright in the Forest in the Night, he even re-interpreted Pollock's drip paintings of the 1960s. An avid artistic and cultural sponge, it’s possible that Geisel, while on his annual New York trip to Random House, saw MoMA’s 1967 comprehensive Pollock exhibition. In ways such as this it is evident Dr. Seuss worked with an artistic tact that was more often than not surprisingly nuanced.

Here Dr. Seuss’s abstract expressionist style surrounds us with architectural echoes that are uniquely and stylistically Seuss. With a wink, he transports us to this stunning town and then leaves us wondering exactly where we are. Could this artwork be a Seussian travelogue of the cities Ted adored and which enticed him to explore time and again? Ionic columns, stairways descending into water, a lone palm tree, an adobe hacienda complete with veranda, Eiffel-esque structures, an elevated train, laundry out to dry, peaked chalets, a majestic entry arch...
