Original Vintage Poster
During World War 2, the British Government had two particular financial problems addressed by this poster. There was little to buy, so the general populace had surplus cash to spend. If they spent it, this would be inflationary and would reduce the supply of items. Likewise, the Government needed money to spend on materiel and was short of cash. Encouraging the population to lend its spare cash to the Government was therefore a solution to this problem, and a series of posters - and other advertisings campaigns - aimed to address this point.
Leslie Wilcox was a renowned maritime painter of his era. His works are in many collections worldwide, including the British Maritime Museum. Born in Fulham, a part of a family of five children, he won a national newspaper's art competition at the age of 14 with a watercolour painting of an aeroplane, and on the strength of this was apprenticed to an advertising studio on The Strand in London. He served during the war initially in the Naval Patrol Service until his artistic skills meant he became a camofleur - spending the rest of the war in Leamington Spa at the Naval Camouflage Unit. His commercial designs such as this show his skill as an artist. In 1953 he was commissioned to paint the Royal Yacht Britannia passing under Tower Bridge - as HM The Queen returned from her successful Commonwealth Tour.
