About the Item
Original vintage advertising poster promoting London Overground and London Underground public transport services - The Londoner's Transport Throughout the Ages - by the notable artist and poster designer Richard T. Cooper (1884-1957), who worked for the Underground Group from 1924 to 1935. Fantastic design featuring colourful historic illustrations showing Some of the Means of transport in London from A.D. 327 to 1927 with stylised text below, starting with Shank's Pony (walking) and a Roman Litter to 15th century travellers and Elizabethan Coaches on the first row depicting horse drawn carriages and oxen with people in period dress; Thames Waterman 1680 and The First Ominibus 1829 to a Posting Carriage 1755 and The Stage Coach 1812 on the second row depicting a lady being helped onto a boat and chickens and children running next to the various carriages; Tilbury 1825 and Gurney's Steam Carriage 1828 to Hansom 1843 on the third row depicting horse drawn carriages next to passengers on the new steam coaches; London's First Horse Drawn Tramway and London General Omnibus 1869 to Thames Penny Steamer 1890, Early Motorbus 1909, Taxicab 1920 and Electric Tram 1925 on the fourth row depicting a lady in Victorian dress with a dog in front of a tram outside Victoria Station, a person waving a Union Jack flag and advertising boards on the sides of the transport with a plane overhead; and the main three images on the last row below of The First Underground Railway 1863 depicting a steam train at Baker Street station on the left side, an image of commuters and other passengers using The Tube on the right side and The First Tube and The Two Penny Tube trains in the centre with the Overground and Underground text and coats of arms, set withing a decorative border with an image of gentleman reading a newspaper above, two wings over the stylised banner title text in red and black letters. By 1914 the Underground Group ran most of the Tube lines, tram systems and the London General Omnibus Company (LGOC; 1855-1933). Published by Underground Electric Railway Company Ltd. Printed by John Waddington Ltd Leeds and London. Large size. Horizontal. Very good condition, restored folds and small paper loss, backed on linen.
