As I Opened Fire Poster (Triptych) (First Edition) /// Pop Art Roy Lichtenstein

1966

About the Item

Artist: (after) Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923-1997) Title: "As I Opened Fire Poster (Triptych) (First Edition)" *Issued unsigned Year: 1966 (First edition) Medium: The Complete Set (Triptych) of Three Offset-Lithograph, Posters on white wove paper Limited edition: 3,140, (this set of three posters are from the very first original print run in 1966, not to be confused with one of the 6+ subsequent reprints up to and even after the artist's death in 1997) Printer: Drukkerij Luii & Co., Amsterdam, Netherlands Publisher: Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands Reference: "The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonné 1948-1997" - Corlett App. 5, page 324; "Lichtenstein Posters" - Döring/Osten No. 14, page 114 Overall size (triptych of all three prints): 25.25" x 62.82" Sheet size (each): 25.25" x 20.94" Image size (each): approx. 24.07" x 19.69" Condition: Some minor edge wear to lower and upper left corners. In otherwise excellent condition with strong colors Rare Notes: Provenance: private collection - Queens, NY. Printed in four colors: red, yellow, blue, and black. Publisher's imprint "Copyright S.M.A." printed on each sheet lower right within image. Artwork and printing information printed lower left and lower right on verso. The images featured on these posters are Lichtenstein's 1964 "As I Opened Fire" triptych painting which is part of the Stedelijk Museum's permanent collection. These "As I Opened Fire Poster (Triptych)" sets are hardly ever described accurately - specifically their year of printing or edition size. From "The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonné 1948-1997" by M. L. Corlett, it is documented that the following print runs were published: 1966: 3,140; 1974: 3,155; 1983: 3,150; 1988: 3,075; 1990: 3,200; 1991: 5,000. And, it is understood a print run in an unknown edition size was published at the time of Lichtenstein's death in 1997, and a few more into the early 2000's. Such examples show his death year printed lower left on verso. Besides these examples printed at the time of and after the artist's death, it is tricky matching these sets specifically to each of the documented lifetime publish years. With careful inspection, one can see the printed information from various sets lower left and lower right on verso very subtlety differ from each other. However, it is rather simple to determine the very first edition from the rest for it is much different than all the others. It is printed lower right on verso: "edition and (copyright logo) copyright, stedelijk museum amsterdam, corrected with the original, printed in the netherlands". Also, the (lower case) "i" in "as i opened fire" printed lower left is not 'dotted'. GIA Gallery Poster Disclaimer: Not to be confused with thousands of contemporary inkjet/giclée/digital reproductions ignorantly or deliberately passed off as originals on the market today. The examples we offer here are the original period vintage (exhibition) posters, created and designed by, or under the supervision and authorization of the artist or their respective estate (posthumously), for various exhibitions and events in which they participated. If applicable, this poster is also fully documented within its respective artists' official catalogue raisonné of authentic graphic works, prints, and or posters. Biography: American artist Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York City on October 27, 1923, and grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side. In the 1960s, Lichtenstein became a leading figure of the new Pop Art movement. Inspired by advertisements and comic strips, Lichtenstein's bright, graphic works parodied American popular culture and the art world itself. He died in New York City on September 29, 1997. Lichtenstein was committed to his art until the end of his life, often spending at least 10 hours a day in his studio. His work was acquired by major museum collections around the world, and he received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the National Medal of Arts in 1995. In 2013 the painting "Woman with Flowered Hat" set another record at $56.1 million as it was purchased by British jeweller Laurence Graff from American investor Ronald O. Perelman. This was topped in November of 2015 by the sale of "Nurse" for 95.4 million dollars at a Christie's auction. Subsequently, that was topped with the private sale of his 1962 painting "Masterpiece" selling for $165 million in January, 2017.
