Shirin Neshat
Rapture

1999

About the Item

Shirin Neshat (b. 1957) is a renowned Iranian-American photographer and visual artist. Neshat is acclaimed for her poignant images exploring gender and cultural identity frequently created through a Persian lens. Neshat's distinct perspective is informed by her experience as a woman artist living in exile from Iran. Reconciling her past and present, Neshat's confronting visual narratives unveil the intricacies and intersection of identity, displacement, and resilience in the face of oppression. "Rapture" is a captivating and iconic work from the artist's breakthrough years. The video work features two synchronized black-and-white films projected on opposing walls, battling for the viewer's attention. The first screen features a group of men, uniformly dressed as they methodically navigate the confines of a beachfront fortress, as featured in this still image. Meanwhile, the opposing screen showcases a group of women dressed in chadors with unrestricted movement throughout an open shorefront. Towards the film's conclusion, a few women embark on a boat, their destination unknown. This piece presents a powerful examination of gender within the public sphere, exploring the intricate interplay of culture, government, and religion and their influence on social order - and rebellion. In 1999, Neshat was awarded with the Golden Lion award for "Rapture" and "Turbulent" (1998). Neshat's most recent exhibition in Canada took place at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art), Toronto in the summer of 2022. Among her honors and accolades, Neshat is the first artist awarded both the Silver Lion (Best Director, Venice Film Festival, 2009) and the Golden Lion (Venice Biennale, 1999). Neshat's work is celebrated in public collections across the globe including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Tate Modern (London), and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam). Questions about this piece? By Claes Oldenburg
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Claes Oldenberg (b.1929) is a Swedish-born American artist, renowned for his contribution to Pop art by way of his iconic soft sculptures and public installations. In 1962, Oldenburg debuted his revolutionary soft sculptures at the Green Gallery in New York. Three giant, squishy sculptures of an ice cream cone, a hamburger, and a slice of cake, swelled across the gallery floor, forever changing the way we define sculpture. It has been noted that Oldenburg's early work was largely inspired by Yayoi Kusama's hand-sewn phallic-shaped soft sculptures that enveloped the surfaces of ironing boards, sofas, and boats. Click here to see an exhibition poster featuring a later example of Kusama's soft sculptures. Ranging from voluminous hamburgers (famously on display at the AGO) to ballistic badminton shuttlecocks, Oldenberg's colossal sculptures replicate commonplace objects on a grand scale, often disrupting the environment they inhibit with curious and playful subtexts. The confrontational nature of Oldenberg's sculptures places an emphasis on the viewer, asking us to reconsider our relationship to these recognizable, but obscure, objects. "Geometric Mouse...

Jenny Holzer is one of the most important and original artists of the 20th century. Her body of work, with an emphasis on text, is consistently provocative and occasionally frightening, manipulating the language of both pop culture and government slogan to produce commentary on global issues notably power structures and warfare. Holzer's iconic "Inflammatory Essays", produced between 1979 and 1982, were first pasted on walls throughout heavily populated metro areas including New York and other cities. Composed of anonymous statements, printed on friendly or calm colored papers, the statements were influenced by writings of major political figures such as Emma Goldman...
