Original vintage advertising poster for Unilever Overseas India. Great illustrated map of India showing the industry production for Unilever with images including a tiger in a jungle, the Taj Mahal and Gateway to India monuments, farming and tea picking, and various cities marked with text showing distances of the area - Delhi to Calcutta over 800 miles Calcutta to Madras over 850 miles Madras to Bombay (now Mumbai) over 600 miles Bombay to Delhi over 700 miles. The product shown on the side include Vim, Lux, Lifebuoy soap, Dalda, Sunlight, Rexona, Pears soap, Himalaya Bouquet talcum powder and Gibbs, with black and white photographs above showing the Bombay Unilever Factory and Calcutta Unilever Factory and diagonal photos below with captions - Sunlight and Lifebuoy being unloaded from the usual Indian handcart; Our products are sold in bazaar streets like this; Delivery of the Dalda brand of vegetable fat to dealers by ox cart; Street scene in Calcutta. The design is set on a pale yellow and pale blue sea background with people in different traditional dress walking behind the title in bold stylised lettering above, the information text on India and its people, communities, languages and population, and the company's production and distribution network in the country below. The British company Lever Brothers was founded by William Hesketh Lever 1st Viscount Leverhulme (1851-1925) and James Darcy Lever (1854-1916) in 1885 (based in north west England); in 1895 they expanded into the American market (based in Cambridge, Massachusetts); in 1929 the company was renamed Unilever after merging with the Dutch company Margarine Unie (founded 1927) to become the first modern multinational company. Unilever is now based in London England operating worldwide. Good condition, restored paper losses, restored tears, staining, backed on linen.
