Beth Secor
Black and White Figurative Print of a Woman 9/20

2009

About the Item

Black and white etching of a young woman named Jessie Magdalene Brewer. This piece features Beth Secor's iconic swirling and knotted brushwork that echo the dense weave of a tapestry. Signed, titled, and editioned in the front bottom. Framed in a natural wood frame. Dimensions Without Frame: H 10.88 in. x W 9 in. Artist Biography: Beth Secor (born 1956, Houston, TX) is a writer, educator, and artist working primarily in gouache on paper. Her subjects are the trees and animals that populate her life, and their significance ranges from family pets to the trees in her neighborhood to the birds that roost there. Secor’s working process is intuitive and obsessive; finished works are often composed of multiple strips of paper added as needed to adjust her compositions, and her swirling, knotted brushwork echoes the dense weave of a tapestry. The resulting images are meditative studies and personal, empathetic documents of time passing. Beth Secor earned a BFA (1980) and an MFA (1989) from the University of Houston. Secor has exhibited widely across the nation. Solo exhibitions include shows in Houston at Inman Gallery (2013, 2009, and 2006); Lawndale Art Center (2013); and Project Row Houses (2006). Recent group exhibitions include 1600 Smith, Houston, TX (2016); galleryHOMELAND, Houston, TX (2015); and Rockport Center for the Arts, Rockport, TX (2014). She has also exhibited internationally in London (2009), Mexico (2006), and Russia (1994). She lives and works in Houston where she is a lecturer at the University of Houston Downtown (UHD).

Artist Biography: Giacomo Manzù, original name Giacomo Manzoni, (born December 22, 1908, Bergamo, Italy—died January 17, 1991, Ardea), Italian sculptor who, in the mid-20th century, revived the ancient tradition of creating sculptural bronze doors for ecclesiastical buildings. His sober realism and extremely delicate modeling alternately achieved austere severity and sensuousness of form and surface, lending a new spirit of vitality to figurative bronze sculpture. Manzù had to leave school at an early age to learn a trade, and he was apprenticed to local craftsmen who taught him to carve wood and to work in metal and stone. After service in the Italian army from 1927 to 1928, Manzù went to Paris to try his luck as a sculptor, but after three weeks he collapsed from hunger and was deported back to Italy. He settled in Milan, and, after receiving a commission in 1929 to decorate a chapel at the Catholic University, he devoted himself to sculpting full-time. Manzù’s early works were nudes, portraits, and biblical subjects, executed in a style that at first was influenced by Etruscan, Egyptian, and medieval art. However, he soon adopted the Impressionist techniques of the Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso...
