1554

About the Item

Etching 195 x 295 mm.; 7 3/4 x 11 3/4 inches Exhibited: Old Master Prints & Drawings: 1450 - 1850, R. S. Johnson Fine Art, December 1999: no. 21. Reference: Hollstein 68 I/II Notes: A fine early impression of this intriguing work. Hieronymus Schurstab (1512 - 1554), the subject of this etching, became the Bürgermeister of Nürnberg in 1545. In the 2nd state of this etching, there is an added inscription “S. Leonardskirch” below the church. This inscription could have been added in 1559 when Schurstab, who looks us directly in the eye, became an important benefactor for the local church of St. Leonard. Concerning the place of this etching in sixteenth-century German printmaking, see: Maitres de l’eau-forte des XVIe et XVII siècles, Musée du Louvre, Paris, 1980: no. 25, p. 24.
