About the Item

A hand-colored portrait of Henry Prince of Wales, Son of James, engraved and etched by the Dutch master of portraits Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) after a painting by Isaac Oliver (1565-1617), who was a painter in King James I's court after the death of Elizabeth I. It was included in Thomas Birch's (1705-1766) publication 'The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain', which was published by I & P Knapton in London in 1738-1742. Henry Frederick (1594-1612), the Prince of Wales was the oldest son of King James VI and I and and his wife Anne of Denmark. He was the heir to the thrones on England and Scotland. However, he died of typhoid fever at the age of 18. Henry's armor, sword and spears adorn the area around his portrait. A jousting match is depicted beneath the portrait. The print is presented in an antiqued silver-colored wood frame with a dark grey outer mat and a gold-colored inner mat. Another Houbraken portrait from the same publication of Henry, Prince of Wales is available on 1stdibs (LU1173260156822) in an identical frame and mat. They would make an attractive display grouping. A discount is available for the purchase of both portraits. Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) was a Dutch engraver who devoted himself almost entirely to portraiture. He produced a published record of the lives of artists from the Dutch Golden Age. In many cases his portraits are the only likenesses left of these people. Houbraken He collaborated with the historian Thomas Birch and artist George Vertue, on the project entitled, "Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain", published in parts in London from 1743 to 1752. From 1752 to 1759 he worked with the historian Jan Wagenaar (1709–1773) on his 21 part "Vaderlandsche Historie", published by Isaac Tirion in Amsterdam.

    This is an original 19th century hand colored McKenney and Hall engraving of a Native American entitled "Chittee-Yoholo, A Seminole Chief, No. 76", published by Rice, Rutter & Co. in 1865. This original McKenney and Hall engraving is presented in a cream colored mat, suitable for framing, with a protective clear sleeve. The mat measures 13.88" x 11.75" and the sheet measures 10.63" x 7.38. The print is in excellent condition. Col. Thomas J. McKenney was Superintendant of The Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1816 until 1830. He was one of a very few government officials to defend American Indian interests and attempt to preserve their culture. He travelled to Indian lands meeting the Native American leaders. He brought with him an accomplished artist, James Otto Lewis, who sketched those willing to participate. A large number of the most influential Indian chiefs and warriors were later invited to come to Washington in 1821 to meet President Monroe.
