James Gillray
"A Great Man on The Turf": A 19th Century James Gillray Hand-colored Etching

1803

About the Item

This framed hand-colored etching and aquatint entitled "A Great Man on The Turf or Sir Solomon in all his Glory" by James Gillray was published in London by Hanna Humphrey, 27 St. James Street on July 7th 1803. The print is signed in the plate in the lower right. It depicts a man, possibly a caricature of the racehorse breeder Sir Solomon. However, there has been some controversy about the identity of the central figure on the mound. Traditionally the man has been thought to represent John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford, a prominent politician and statesman. The figure is standing on a mound facing to the right, watching a race on a cloudy day. He wears his horse riding costume, including spurs on his boots and a riding-switch in his right hand. Three horses race in the background with crowds of tiny cheering figures in the distance, some on foot and others on horseback. This Gillray etching is held by many museums, including: The British Museum, The National Portrait Gallery and The Yale University Museum of Art. This hand-colored Gillray satirical etching and aquatint is presented in a gold-colored ornamental frame with a cream-colored French mat. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. The frame measures 23.13 in height, 19.13" in width and maximum of 1.88" in depth. There is some faint spotting, but the print is otherwise in very good condition. James Gillray (1756-1815) was a British caricaturist/satirist and printmaker who was popular in his time and he is still famous for his political and social satire. He has been called "the father of the political cartoon". His satirical targets included King George III, Napoleon, as well as prime ministers and generals. He is one of the most accomplished of a large number of important British caricaturists, including William Hogarth, Thomas Rowlandson, Isaac and George Cruikshank and the Vanity Fair artists, such as Leslie Ward (Spy). His works were published by Hanna Humphrey and often were displayed in her London gallery window when they were completed.

  • "Neptune Washington", Fisherman Polling His River Boat in the Rain by Ron Adams
    Located in Alamo, CA
"Neptune Washington" is a large contemporary lithograph by Ron Adams (1934- ), created in 1996. It depicts a muscular African-American fisherman polling his fishing boat in a river in the rain. Adams distinctive rendering of Neptune conveys his great strength, as well as the grace, fluidity and balance of his body. He is barefoot and shirtless, dressed in striped overalls with his right shoulder strap undone. A bucket of fish sits next to his left foot, while fishing line, an open tin can and a frog are seen on a wet bench in front of Neptune. A long-necked white bird (crane) sits on a log floating by in the river near the opposite shore. Ominous storm clouds are present in the background over trees, brush and rocks along the opposite river bank. The lithograph is printed on handmade deckle-edged paper and presented with a museum style floating mount in a black wood frame with a thick cream mat and glazed with UV protected plexiglass. It is signed in pencil in the right lower corner along with the date, '96. The title "Neptune Washington" is inscribed in pencil in the lower margin in the center and initials HGI are in the lower left. The initials HGI may stand for Hand Graphics Institute, which Adams founded in New Mexico. The initials rather than the usual edition number (which consisted of 70), possibly signify an artist proof or possibly a Hors-Commerce (before trade) printing. The print is in excellent condition. The frame measures 38" x 30.25" x 1.25". Ron Adams is a prominent African-American master printmaker. His detailed depictions of African-American musicians, craftsmen, folk heroes and everyday people have made him one of the top figurative artists and printmakers in the country. He has worked with and taught many other well-known artists, including Frank Stella, Charles White, John Biggers, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Jones...

  • Parmigiani Amica: An 18th Century Engraving and Etching by Strange After Mazzola
    Located in Alamo, CA
This is an 18th century engraving and etching entitled "Parmigiani Amica" by Robert Strange after a painting by Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, better known as Parmigianino, who lived during the Renaissance period. It was published in London in 1774. As the inscription states, the painting was in the collection of the King of Naples at the time the engraving was made. The engraving depicts a half-length portrait of a young woman, known as Parmigiani's Amica (meaning "female friend" in Italian). She is depicted wearing a simple but elegant dress with a low-cut neckline, which reveals her delicate features and graceful neck. Her hair is arranged in a simple yet stylish manner. She is turning to the right to look lovingly at her infant, which she is holding with her right arm. She is touching the baby's mouth with her left hand. The background of the engraving is plain and unadorned, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the subject of the portrait. The result is a beautiful and timeless image that captures the essence of Renaissance portraiture. The engraving is printed on watermarked paper. The sheet measures 16.25" high and 12' wide. The sheet is adhered to paper in its upper corners and it has been removed from the paper in its lower corners. There is some mild discoloration and some wrinkling in the margins, including the lower inscription area, and a small dark spot in the upper margin, which may represent a drop of ink occuring at the time of printing. These issues do not involve the image, which is in very good condition. The print is held by several museums and institutions, including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The British Museum in London, The Royal Museums of the UK, The British National Trust...
