Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767), engraver Johann Stenglin (1715-1770), engraver Martin van Meytens (1695-1770), inventor Ferdinand Count of Plettenberg (1690-1737) as a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece around 1736/1737Paper mezzotint Height: 47,2 cm (sheet) width: 31,8 cm (sheet) Height: 46,0 cm (plate) Width: 30,7 cm (plate) First intended for the clergy, after the death of his older brother Werner (+ 1711) heir and lord of Nordkirchen; hereditary marshal and privy councilor of Münster, as a diplomat of Bavaria successful preparation of the bishop elections of Clemens August v. Bavaria in Paderborn and Münster in 1719, the elections as Elector of Cologne in 1722, as Bishop of Hildesheim in 1724 and Osnabrück in 1728, and as High and German Master in 1732. In 1724, he rendered services to the establishment of the Wittelsbach House Union; from 1730, he pursued a pro-imperial policy and approved the Pragmatic Sanction of the Electorate of Cologne, for which he was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1732. After a court affair in 1733, he fell from grace and was dismissed from the service of the Electorate of Cologne. He transferred to the service of the Emperor, first as his representative in the Lower Rhenish-Westphalian Imperial District, and in 1737 was appointed Imperial Ambassador to Rome, but died suddenly before his departure from Vienna.

    A scarce mezzotint engraved by James Watson published in May,1778. Proof before title; the image has maintained is rich dark tonality. John Hely-Hutchinson (1724-1794) was a politician, lawyer and Provost of Trinity College, Dublin. Born in Gortroe, County Cork in 1724, he graduated from Trinity College in 1744, and swiftly built up a good practice at the Bar. From 1760 until his death he represented Cork in Parliament. Promotion to the post of Prime Serjeant followed in 1761 and on most issues he supported the Government, and acquired several lucrative offices. His appointment as Provost of Trinity as a married layman who had not been a Fellow was a continued source of friction as the Fellows resented the imposition of what they perceived as a career politician with no pretensions to scholarship.
