Oscar Magallanes
West Coast Machiavelli

2013

About the Item

Signed and numbered from the edition of 49. Oscar Magallanes’ tribute to the iconic Hip Hop figure Tupac Shakur. This is one in an ongoing series of portraits of personal heroes and martyrs that also serves as a mapping of the artist’s own psyche through his cultural, historical and political influences. Titled “Heuristic” the portraits also serve as an exploration of the makeup of popular culture and people’s movements by contrasting present and past paradigms. The piece’s precise hard edge lines and flat colors are emblematic of the artist’s trademark style. The graphic nature of the work further adds to the depth and thoughtfulness of the subject matter.
