Otto Neals
FLOWERS Signed Woodcut Young Woman Hoop Earring Tropical Floral Dress, Woodgrain

2004

About the Item

FLOWERS is an original limited edition woodcut print by the African-American painter and sculptor, Otto Neals. The woodblock used to print FLOWERS was hand carved by Otto Neals and printed in two colors - burnt orange and black on Rives BFK printmaking paper, 100% acid free, enhanced with hand colored accents. FLOWERS portrays an exotic portrait of a young black woman posed in profile with long dark wavy hair, looking downward wearing a lively floral print dress and large silver hoop earrings. In FLOWERS, the natural texture impression from the wood printing block creates a dramatic, undulating woodgrain background; a single yellow daisy flower in front of the woman and elongated dark green leaves behind her add visual interest to this captivating, contemplative feminine portrait by Otto Neals. Print size - 18" x 25.25", unframed, mint condition, pencil signed by Otto Neals Image size - 12.75" x 20" Edition size - 90, plus proofs Year published - 2004 Printer - JK Fine Art Editions Co. Before he was five years old, his family left the South and settled in Brooklyn, New York, where he still resides. All of Mr. Neals’ schooling was in Brooklyn, where he studied commercial art at George Westinghouse Vocational High School. Neals describes himself as a self-taught artist although he studied briefly at the Brooklyn Museum Art School with Isaac Soyer and printmaking at the Bob Blackburn Printmaking Workshop with Krishna Reddy, Mohammed Khalil and Roberto DeLomanica. He was introduced to stone carving by sculptor Vivian Schuyler Key, who presented him with his first set of stone carving tools. The Prospect Park Alliance and Ezra Jack Keats Foundation commissioned him in 1995 to create a bronze sculpture entitled “Peter and Willie”, based on the works of author and illustrator Keats. For this work, which is located in the “Imagination Playground” in Prospect Park, Mr. Neals was presented with the New York City Arts Commission’s “Award for Excellence in Design”. I am merely a receiver, an instrument for receiving some of the energies that permeate our entire universe and I give thanks for having been chosen to absorb those artistic forces.”

Bearden grew up in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City and attended New York University where he received a degree in mathematics. Following graduation, Bearden turned his attention to art, pursuing further studies with George Grosz at the Art Students League. The artist served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. After leaving the Army, Bearden used funds from the GI Bill to travel to Europe for six months to study art history and philosophy at the Sorbonne. During this trip, Bearden had the opportunity to meet Henri Matisse, Georges Braque and Joan Miro, all of who had a strong influence on his artwork. Bearden’s work on canvas and collages expressed the complexities of rural Black America. “My intention is to reveal through pictorial complexities of the life I know,” he said. He integrated scenes from his childhood in North Carolina and from New York City, including many rituals and social customs. Another theme throughout his work was music. Bearden grew up surrounded by musicians and loved jazz and blues. Romare Bearden’s artwork can be found in numerous permanent collections around the country including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Retrospective exhibitions of Bearden’s art have been held by The Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte; the Museum of Modern Art; the Detroit Institute; and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
