YOUNG WOMAN BRAIDED HAIR is an original hand drawn (not digitally or photo reproduced) limited edition lithograph by the artist Raphael Soyer - Russian/American Social Realism Painter, 1899-1987. Printed in NYC 1977 by master printer Joseph Kleineman from a hand drawn lithography stone using traditional hand lithography techniques on archival Arches printmaking paper 100% acid-free rag.
YOUNG WOMAN BRAIDED HAIR is a sensitive, realist female portrait depicting a moody girl with dark braided hair wearing a notch neck blouse; her facial expression appearing serious and contemplative as she looks slightly downward. Fine impression - has the feel of a graphite drawing.
Print size - 18 x 14 inches, unframed, very good condition, hand signed by Raphael Soyer, from the master printers private collection.
Raphael Soyer was a Russian-born painter. He was the twin to the artist Moses Soyer (1899-1974) and the older brother of the painter Isaac Soyer (1907-1981). “During the 1930’s their work was typical of the Social Realism style practiced by the American Scene painters, depicting the lives of working people with sympathy and at times a touching air of melancholy, as in Raphael’s well-known ‘Office Girls’ (Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 1936).” (The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art and Artists, edited by Ian Chilvers). Raphael Soyer
Raphael Soyer, a Russian-born artist, was best known for his compassionate, naturalistic depictions of urban subjects. His sensitive, penetrating portrayals include a broad range of city dwellers, dancers, shoppers, office workers and fellow artists. Historically, Soyer is associated with the social realist artists of the 1930s, whose art championed the cause of social justice. Soyer was referred to as an American scene painter. He is identified as a Social Realist because of his interest in men and women viewed in contemporary settings which included the streets, subways, salons and artists' studios of New York City. He also wrote several books on his life and art. His brothers Moses and Issac were also notable artists.

It is hand signed an inscribed A.C (Hors Commerce) in pencil by the artist. The image size is 24.5 x 22 inches, sheet size is 28 x 24.5 inches. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed. About the artist: Wai Ming, was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974.
