In this offset poster, printed in collaboration with the Lower East Side literary magazine, "Between C & D," David Wojnarowicz confronts and denounces violence against members of the LGBT community. Cynthia Carr discusses this poster in her biography, "Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz." She relates the episode of when Wojnarowicz became estranged from collaborator Marion Scemama during the production of this piece and inked out her name on the copies of the poster in his possession. This is a copy from his estate. Between C & D (1983–1990) was a Lower East Side quarterly literary magazine edited by Joel Rose and Carherine Texier. Though a geographical reference to the blocks between Avenue C and Avenue D in New York City's East Village neighborhood, “Between C & D” has also been suggested to mean “between coke and dope,” giving an indication of the publication's transgressive content and ethos. The magazine's actual tagline was “Sex. Drugs. Danger. Violence. Computers.” It was printed on fanfold computer paper, sold in a plastic bag, and featured original artwork on each binding. It was created in 1982 in conjunction with the gallery exhibition of Johnson's paintings at Gimpel and Weitzenhoffer Gallery NYC. GROUP WALKING was printed in color offset lithography on high quality 80 lb. satin finish paper in soft pastel shades of pale peach, orange, pink, brown, green, muted navy blue, gray, black and white. GROUP WALKING is a modern figurative portrait depicting four young women with auburn hair dressed in fashionable multicolored print sheath dresses and one young man wearing a navy blue Yankees cap smoking his cigarette in the background as they pass each other on a city street. Abramović is best known for physically and mentally demanding performance works that are often transgressive and revolve around the body, gender, energy, time, pain, presence, and identity. Her performances range from powerful, violent, and risky actions to quieter exchanges of energy and meetings with the audience. And especially in recent years, we the audience have increasingly become key players in her works. The exhibition at Louisiana comprised more than 100 works and spans more than five decades – from early concept sketches, paintings and sound works to presentations of the artist’s performances – including her collaboration with former partner Ulay. Reperformances of an early work formed part of the exhibition as well.
