V. Green after L. Abbott
V. Green after L. Abbott - 1790 Aquatint, Goffers At Blackheath

1790

About the Item

A fine hand coloured aquatint showing a finely dressed golfer and his caddy on the old Blackheath course. The original piece was based on a painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott and was issued by Valentine Green as a Mezzotint print, circa 1790. It is one of the first golf portraits ever published, and the Blackheath golf course depicted in the print was a primitive five-to-seven-hole course. The subject of the painting is William Innes, a member of the Royal Blackheath Golfers and local merchant. The publisher's details and dedication are inscribed in plate at the lower edge. The artwork is presented in a simple black frame. On wove.
