René Lalonde
The Art of Modern Living

2022

About the Item

The Art of Modern Living is a digital pigment print on paper, image size 24 x 38.5 inches and framed in a contemporary light wood frame. Signed 'RENÉ LALONDE' lower right and annotated lower left. Numbered XC/C from the edition of 325 (there were also 195 Arabic, 25 AP and 5 HC, all on canvas). It is difficult to categorize the vibrant, luminous, and delightful work of René Lalonde, an art that he himself referred to as ‘New Modern Art’ and which was rooted in many other traditions from American Modernists like Thomas Hart Benton and Charles Sheeler to the psychedelia of Peter Max and most importantly the infused and magical light of Maxfield Parrish. Lalonde’s world was strongly influenced by his ‘monastery-like’ time in boarding school from the ages of 6 – 12. There, he was forced to imagine the outside world and thus developed a vivid imagination as well as what he described as an ‘inner peace’ that held throughout his life. Additionally, he was profoundly affected by the revolutionary events in the music world of the sixties, beginning with the Beatles and the British Invasion, and evolving into the psychedelic culture of the late sixties and seventies. His mature style, developed throughout the eighties and nineties shows influences from fauvism and surrealism in addition to the artists mentioned above, and yet, Lalonde’s art is always uniquely his own, not belonging to any of these art movements. That unique vision has drawn collectors for decades to artworks that express an indelible ‘je ne sais quoi’ – fascinating, strange, intriguing, and somehow emotionally satisfying. Lalonde gives us odd and enchanting still lifes, intimate interiors, fantastical exteriors and landscapes, and always a masterful blend of vivid colors and unusual shapes. Ordinary objects, landscapes, or architecture through Lalonde’s paintbrush always metamorphosize into extraordinary visions. Welcome to the world of René Lalonde!

  • Red Umbrella, 2017
    By Liudmila Kondakova
    Located in Greenwich, CT
Red Umbrella is an archival digital pigment print on canvas, 19 x 24" canvas size, made with serigraph texture plates, signed ‘Kondakova’ in the right corner and numbered in the left corner. Framed in a contemporary, gold-tone frame. From the total edition of 325; numbered 157/295 (there were also 25 AP and 5 HC). The unframed image is the edition number being sold and the framed image is an example of how the artwork is framed. It is hard to match the romantic impact of gently falling snow. Its quieting effect on the world, as it muffles noise, diffuses light, and softens hard edges creates a sensation of calm and insulation. City dwellers, like anyone else, are not immune to its seductive nature, and eschew other modes of transportation to take a romantic walk...

  • Dragons (Sacred Places)
    Located in Greenwich, CT
Dragons is a serigraph on paper with an image size 13 x 13 inches, signed 'Ricker' lower right and annotated lower left. Framed in a contemporary gold-tone frame. Numbered 29/200, from the edition of 500 (there were also 50 Roman on paper, 200 Arabic on canvas and 50 Roman on canvas). Framed in a contemporary silver-tone moulding. Ricker created four stunning images for a suite titled ‘Sacred Places’ – all powerful images of earthly splendor. The vistas he paints, almost desolate in a primeval way, are a chorus of voices that sing of the glory of nature. In a style which he calls ‘Epic Visionary,’ he presents a view that is at once new and fresh and yet as deep-rooted and enduring as the pristine landscapes themselves. In the images of ‘Sacred Places,’ Ricker’s harmonious layering and blending of colors, muted blues and greens, contrast with the jutting precipices and craggy outcrops of rock that punctuate each portrait. The effects of the elements are visible and beautiful, creating carved layers in the rock and earth, and weaving a ribbon of shimmering water as a central feature in each work. “…these places…are sacred places – they are sacred because their beauty is so deep and mysterious that we are stopped in our tracks…for the moment, we can’t imagine anything better on earth or in heaven.” – Bruce...
