About the Item

The Book of the Horse Samuel Sidney (1813 – 1883) London, 1873 Cassell Petter & Galpin Chromolithography Man’s fascination with the horse has spanned many centuries. Admired for both strength and beauty, the horse was domesticated for both its capacity for work and pleasure. The horse has gone to war and has won awards – both under the aegis of man. While not especially scientific, this work hopes to familiarize the reader with each breed, old and new. Set against fields for the most part, the horses stand in an alert manner presumably showing their best confirmation. In many of the examples the horses are accompanied by their riders presumably illustrating the various gaits. Found in this work is another splendid example of chromolithography. Printing in color on stone was a remarkable technique, developed in America, for creating rich colors in a very painterly fashion. It was most successfully used with lush backgrounds and painterly subjects.
