My Obey “Bad Reputation” print is inspired by music graphics, especially punk and new wave album sleeves, t-shirts, and flyers. I love the Xerox machine with spot color approach to a lot of those graphics that married the rough and crude side of financial and artistic limitations with an intuitive and clever ability to craft subversive, eye-catching images. Some of the edges of this imagery and text are intentionally rough and imperfect… if slick and clean are your bag, you might want to skip this one baby! See if you can spot the references to musicians like the New York Dolls, Generation X, the Misfits, and the easy one… Joan Jett. If you DON’T know those musicians, you can thank me for opening a door for you, and in turn I say “thank you” to everyone who has opened my ears and eyes! – Shepard
Shepard Fairey is a major influencer in the street art movement along side Banksy, Mr. Brainwash, and others. He has gained notoriety as a graphic artist, muralist, and an expert in mixed media. He was born on February 15, 1970 in Charleston, South Carolina.

Expanding on the legacies of artists such as Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, Shepard Fairey’s practice disrupts the distinction between fine and commercial art.
A major artist of the street art movement, Fairey rose to prominence in the early 1990s through the dispersion of prints, posters, stickers and murals, related to his Obey Giant campaign, which yielded an international cultural phenomenon. Fairey’s iconic poster of President Barack Obama was adopted as the official emblem associated with the presidential campaign and encapsulates a number of recurring concerns in the artist’s work, including propaganda, portraiture and political power.
