A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes, this series - and we have many in this series - have a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view.
The Kawanishi H8K flying boat (Allied code name "Emily") was an all-metal, four-engine, large-size, Type 2 Flying Boat used by the Imperial Japanese Navy. It was considered to be the best flying boat of World War II. It was built to replace the Kawanishi H6K and to exceed the performance of the Short S.25 Sunderland and Sikorsky XPBS-1 Patrol Bomber (posters of both of these planes are also available). A total of 167 of the Type 2 were built, and the plane made its inaugural flight in January, 1941.
The performed well, moving at impressive speed with good range, and was well armed, providing protection for its crew. Its offensive capability was very effective in anti-submarine campaigns and was the scourge of American submarines during the war.
The Emily was used on a wide range of patrol, reconnaissance, bombing, and transport missions throughout the Pacific war. As a troop carrier, it could hold up to 64 soldiers. Only four aircraft survived until the end of the war.
