William Kentridge
THE NOSE, photogravure, aquatint and drypoint, signed and numbered, Ed. of 70

2010

About the Item

This is a monochromatic photogravure, aquatint and drypoint on Hahnemuhle Copperplate warm white paper. Created in 2010, it is signed in pencil lower right and numbered from the edition of 70. The image dimensions are 10 5/8 by 16 5/8 inches. The sheet size is 16 3/4 x 22 7/8 inches. Published by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc., New York "Shadow silhouettes and sketched figures populate much of William Kentridge's work, including this print from one of his Nose series. The print's darkened borders and draping lines frame the figures, intentionally referencing the curtains of a theatrical proscenium. The figures and newsprint imagery relate to animations Kentridge designed to project on the set of the Metropolitan Opera's March 2010 production of The Nose. The Shostakovich opera (1930) retells the satirical short story (1836) by Nikolai Gogol, in which an overly ambitious Russian bureaucrat wakes to find that his nose has inexplicably left his face and is gallivanting about town dressed as a uniformed gentleman of higher rank than himself! In a confrontation, the nose boldly denies that his proper station is upon the lesser man's face. In this print, the enlarged (human-sized) nose and a nude male figure posture and strut like overstuffed officers. The backdrop is papered in propaganda, including the profile of a man with censored nose and the caption, "Врёте!" ("Lying!"). Kentridge sees parallels between the 19th-century bureaucracy Gogol satirizes, Stalinist Russia of Shostakovich's time, and the former apartheid system of his own native South Africa. The absurd logic of social hierarchy, government control, injustice, and personal responsibility are important themes for Kentridge. He feels that the problems of the real world are best revealed through the absurd. Gogol chose an absurdist construct-the separation of a man from his own nose-to externalize an internal struggle. The Nose series, like other works by Kentridge, explores the conflict arising within an individual who must conform to the values of an absurd political and social system." - Karla Niehus, Assistant Curator of Collections and Exhibitions *Please note: The frame is for reference purposes only. The impression is not framed. Acclaimed South African artist, William Kentridge designed the dramatic sets, created videos and directed the production of Dmitri Shostakovich’s, The Nose at the Metropolitan Opera. The artist also created a limited edition of the same title, The Nose to coincide with the production for Lincoln Center. This impression is signed and numbered limited edition of 70. William Kentridge (b. 1955, Johannesburg, South Africa) The work of South African artist William Kentridge tracks a personal route across the fraught legacy of apartheid and colonialism through the innovative use of charcoal drawing, prints, collages, stop-animation, film, and theater. Kentridge sees his work as rooted in Johannesburg - the city in which he was born and continues to work today. In 2010, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, organized a large-scale exhibition featuring nearly three decades of the artist’s work.
